I saw a thread on this before but I think it was kind of old so here's the deal I have a BNIB zt 0561 and a good friend of mine has a BNIB 2012 microtech socom elite black spearpoint blade, carbon fiber inserts, with the s35vn blade. I saw that the prices of the knives are pretty much equal and he's willing to trade me, I really really want that socom elite , but the things that scare me are 1. Microtechs customer service or lack there of , I've heard all the horror stories, and 2 is those microtech screws, If i want to even adjust my pivot or pocket clip i cant. So what would you guys do I know ZT has some of the best customer service in the business, but that socom elite is just sexy, what would you guys do and why please give me more than a zt 561 or microtech, explain which knife you prefer and why and what you would do in my situation. I'm torn really i can't make the decision so please help i've googled and youtubed till im sick of doing it, time for some input from owners of both knives. I'm aware of the situation between MT and ZT with the 777 and i know thats gonna turn alot of people off of MT and honestly I sayed i would never buy a MT, but i just can't get that socom out of my head, BTW I cant actually hold the knife my good friend lives in washington state and im in alabama.

Man from asking multiple questions here i think the real answer is, what knife fits your needs better? Personally i havent had either of them but i def like the 0561 better.

It's just gonna be used as a cutting tool, no self defense , just regular everyday use, I've owned all sorts of knives but never owned a MT, and the look of the socom along with CrimsonTideshooters videos on them on youtube, It's made me want one really really bad, I've owned 2 or 3 560s and traded them off and this 0561 is perfect all the others had a tiny amount of blade play , but not his 0561 its perfect lockup detent is perfect, everything, had it been one of my other 560s i'd do it in a heartbeat, but this 561 is perfect in every aspect

are you getting tired of your 0561?

yea I'm kind of tired of the design and looking for something I've never had before. i bought the 561 as a spur of the moment type thing, and they were rarer than the 560 at the time so i pulled the trigger It's a great knife don't get me wrong but I've just watched all the youtube videos that say that the socom elite slices better than the spyderco military if thats true than i gotta try it. I just dont know if i wanna give up my 561 that i know zt will stand behind their product 100% for a MT that I've heard of people waiting 6 months to get their knife back.

I would make that trade, in a heart beat. The 560's I've handled just haven't impressed me. Yes, they are big and tank like, but I expect more from a flipper in that price range. I am contemplating another Elite, but I may wait and see what's up with that MT/Strider collab. The flipper version looks great.

As far as CS goes, I talked to a shop owner who knows Marfione personally and he said that one of his sons is stepping up and taking more control in the business. And that cs is one of the things he's trying to get a handle on. But who knows. Any MT dealer should be able to handle most problems for you though.

ZT probably beat MT as a company. Even though I hate MT, but Socom Delta probably beat 0561 as a quality knife.

I wouldnt let warranty issues stop me if I wanted the other knife. How often do you actually need to send a knife back for fixing anyway? Mostly just happens for qc issues that dont get noticed. If you already know the socom is good (the guy is your buddy and not just a random trade), then it probably wont need fixing any time soon.

yea the guy is a good friend of mine, he wouldn't do me wrong we've done countless trades I actually introduced him to blade forums and the Socom is brand new, I'm gonna do the trade, I'll take my chances on the CS like someone said above how often do you really send a knife in. If i don't like it , they seem to hold their value pretty good and i think i would have no problems selling it, If i dont like it.

I am a great fan of the Kershaw / ZT knives but I have a Socom Elite from way back when and I will say, it is about as comfortable to hold and use as any knife I've ever owned. It sliced well. It is solid, no kind of play. In some ways, Microtech has trashed a once-outstanding reputation. But if you get one Microtech, the Socom Elite is a great choice. I don't think you will be unhappy with it. (And ZT will be around for awhile if you want to replace yours. :) )

ive got a zero tolerance 0300, thats my go to hard use knife, I'm really wanting a lightweight knife that will cut like crazy, thats what got me looking at the socom elite , My only gripe is those stupid microtech screws, I understand why they do it but could they at least but torx screws on the pivot and pocket clip i mean come on. Either way i'm gonna do the trade.

I have both. I really think they are both great knives. The Microtech cuts a little better, but the ZT doesn't have a super thick edge either. I will hang onto both for sure. For me, it's just a matter of what I want to carry that day. Today it's the Socom Elite. Tomorrow, who knows?
