I'm looking for a program that can be installed on a USB flashdrive, that lets you encrypt and password protect text files on the same flashdrive, then lets you plug in to any PC and open the files with the password.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I know there are flash drives that offer such features, but I havent heard of a program to install on existing non-protected drives.

Yeah, I think most models come with such a feature, but as far as I know there is no program to install to protect one.

Thansk Senator, my flashdrive came with no software on it, just a movie trailer in WMV format.

Senator, I DL'd TrueCrypt, and that's exactly what I was looking for, as with most freeware, teh documentation could have been better, but I have it figured out and it works perfect!

Thanks again!

TechTV had a show on programs that can be loaded onto a flash drive, including the Mozilla browser. Take your bookmarks and such with you!

TLC - Glad I could help.

mwerner - I use portable Firefox on my thumb drive. It works very well. I use my favorite extensions and bookmarks. I also have portable OpenOffice on it as well, but haven't had to use it yet. Here's a link to both apps (as well as a few others.)

Congrats on your first official act as a Community Mod! There will be many more where this came from! ;) :D

You gotta use the truck! You go carrying heavy things like this around on your back you'll give yourself a hernia!

Don't worry about gas; the company pays for that....

Where do we move threads that have major moderator topic drift? :foot: :D :p

Hmmm.... good question.

I'll use the truck next time, Cougar. Leave a key in my mailbox.

See, this is what happens when you let the hired help have perks like a company truck -- we get lazy and loaf around gabbing in front of the paying customers. Sorry about that ... we're going back to work now.

Tote that thread!
Ban that troll!
Stomp that spam!

You could slap GNUPG on it, which I have done. There is also TrueCrypt as Senator mentioned.

I do not recommend using any built-in encryption that comes with these devices. It's proprietary, closed-source stuff even if they let you know the algorithm. In fact one of Lexar's "secure" JumpDrives actually stored the encryption key on the device! Encryption is easy to mess up, but that was particularly bad mistake.

Edited to add: Just noticed you went with TruCrypt. Good choice and remember to wipe the free space if you've had any plaintext on it.

Thanks, I found a great webpage that gives intructions for TrueCrypt that are way better than the doc's it came with.
