I'm looking for some suggestions: I would like to get each of the outdoor training guides (about 6 of them) a simple but easy to maintain (to a shaving edge) folding knife. Preferably one handed opening and lockable but will consider traditional non-locking folders (ala SAKs). Hopefully it has two blades - one large, one small. Please, no 420J steel.

Problem is I have only a budget of $6-7 per knife. I remember reading someone selling some german made vintage knives for only $5 apiece.

Any ideas? It's not that I'm cheap - I just don't have any money but I feel that they really need a knife. They keep borrowing mine.

At that price, Opinel is about it for anything resembling quality. Fortunately, the quality is high. You can get stainless or carbon steel. The edge is convex, very strong and sharp. The lock is simple and effective, but not automatic and will often be overlooked even in jurisdictions that frown on combat style knives. The wooden handles are comfortable and can be customized with a little whittling or carving or coloring. You can get them in many sizes and even different wood handles.

Yet another vote for Opinel. Many different sizes and models are available. The best "picnic" knife ever devised--use it to slice your cheese and salami and apples and various veggies and if you happen to leave it in the grass--8 bucks or so will replace it.

please, where's the best and cheapest place to get opinels? what about the edges - are they convex or v-grind? how can I tell?

thanks.

Victorinox SAK Pocket Pal. Nice little 2 blade SAK that sell for about 7 bucks or so.

Smokey Mountain (Eknifeworks) is probably as good as any -- http://eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/index.html

Upper right hand corner, Search "Opinel", lots of variety in stock.

For example,

Opinel 4" Carbon Folder with Beechwood Handle $7.49
Opinel 4" Stainless Folder with Beechwood Handle $8.49
(blade is about 3/4" inch shorter than the handle)

Smaller folders cost less, fancier folders, pruning knives, and saw cost more. I don't know what shipping to Singapore is like. You might be better off getting someone over here to buy them and ship to you, rather than the dealer.

Opinel. I carried a carbon blade for years. The stainless blade is nice looking. Might be better for outdoor use or a more humid climate?

It's a little more then you were thinking but Newgraham has the Victorinox Tinker on sale for $9.99. Nice knive for that price.

slide,
I saw that black tinker on Newgraham too. I think I might go for that as the tools will help the guides out a bit too. Probably buy 5-6 to maximise on shipping costs.

Anyone know what steel Victorinox uses in its SAKs?

thanks,

I think they use 440a or something similar, but I would not swear to that.
