I Need to Feel the Sun

So I am putting it out there to the world, and asking for any suggestions/smoke/ideas that anyone might have ....

In short ~

I was hoping to get a caretaker's position out in northern CA. Some of you may remember that post, and thank you for the suggestions. This position seems to be falling through, which is unfortunate for both parties.

My regular job is going "corporate" and the atmosphere is quickly turning from 6 people working their hearts out and enjoying it, to one of 'cover your own a**' and get out while you can. Also unfortunate for both parties, because no one wins.

So .... I need to get out and see the sun.

Anybody need any help this summer? Anybody know of anybody that needs some help this summer?

Or any ideas of cool places to go and live cheap, or any interesting adventures going on that need just one more person...

Just feels like a decade since I've seen the sun, and I'm thinking it is time to truly refresh myself.

Thanks any and all.

Good post Bamboo :)

Have you ever given consideration to becoming a Smoke Jumper ?
Like for a year or two? Dangerous but rewarding.

Bamboo, come to Florabama and help me rebuild my pier. Sunny all day long, standing in nice cool water up to your chest. Driving 12 ft. pilings is honest work, and never mind all those huge stingrays, poisonous spined catfish & rock crabs that can break a finger or toe. Of course, the debris from the old pier is down there *somewhere* and there'll be other surprises found too.

The guys who built it 2 years ago were burned black by all-day-in-the-sun. Luckily, they were too drunk to really feel the sunburn.

Sound like fun? Not to me either.... but that's where I'll be.

Ad Astra  :( :footinmou

oh, yeah- as aa bonus, you can even stay in the khukuri-infested, cursed FEMA trailer- I should be back in my house by June.

Dang, Bill, that looks really interesting. Wish I were younger.

Pretty rigorous physical requirments. They want you to be able to run a 6:20 mile for 1.5 miles. Best I ever did was 6:35 in a 5K.

Be fun to get in shape for it, though.

Dang...that pretty much has described my entire worklife since college. :(
Now I really feel worthless. Anyway, hope you can find something meaningful to do. As for me, I have 1275 workdays left to retirement (according to my Excel spreadsheet...LOL).

I ran a six low something mile when I was 17. That was 30 years ago. As space and time go on forever, somewhere, probably in the outskirts of the Galaxy, I'm still running that mile and doing well. There aren't any forest fires out there though, so the intergalatic smoke jumpers really don't need me.

you know what? I would LOVE to. That sounds great to me. Id eat every one of those critters you mentioned, deep fried and dunked in tartar sauce.
Id absolutely love to go do that kind of work.
Grass and dirt and lil debbies and actual SPACE.
Damn, I really wish I could.

What kind of caregiver are you? Down here in Phoenix I would think it would be easy to find that type of work, as this place is I'm sure 95% over 55.....just kidding, but it is a huge retirement community and those people are always looking for good workers to help out. Heck, I need my house painted and all my grass dug up and new top soil put down......well if I'm going to dig it up I'll probably just haul in another 10 tons of rocks and sell the lawn mower. :D

But seriously if you like the sun, Phoenix is a wonderful place to live and I'd think you could find work. :)

Thanks guys & gals,

AA - sounds like fun, but if it is ok with you I'll just put it on the list for now. Not sure spending my summer in a cursed trailer is what I would term 'refreshing.' :D

And neither should you!

Bill - Congrats on the Red badge of courage. 1st time I've seen you wear it...
I think the window of opportunity to be a smoke jumper passed me by about 5 years ago. I did look into it at one time. I think at 32 it is not quite right for me.

But those are the kind of ideas I am looking for. This world is so big, and I know there are all kinds of opportunities out there, but most of the great ones are kept pretty quiet...

The hunt continues...

Man. I finally get somebody who wants to HELP, and he's stuck in Noda-Shi, Japan.

We do have great seafood here, no joke. Best Gulf shrimp (not asian job-stealing, price undercutting imports) also Scamp, Amberjack, Snapper, even fresh-caught Mullet (tastes like chicken- only fish with a gizzard)

Thanks, Danny. Appreciate the thought.

We have great sushi too, but I bet you're getting tired of that. :p

I was thinking about AZ, as well as CO, and CA.

I've never actually worked as a caretaker before (land caretaker that is, not human caregiver/provider - never done that, probably wouldn't be very good at it either), but have done all of the pieces that make up the job at different times in life, so it seemed like a good idea.

Phoenix you say, eh? Maybe I should try and jump a plane for the Khuk Nut Gathering ....

You should do that. The guy who did my yard is looking for a partner, I think. I'll ask him and get back to you.

Please, Please, Pretty Please, Absolutely FORGET about Kali, Commie, Hellfire-fornia!!!! :grumpy:

You really Absolutely Do Not want to immigate there!!!!

Arizona and Colorado are fine. And I would lean towards Arizona because of the freedom to carry a pistol on your side wherever as well as a long knife although you might be asked some questions in some areas like banks, courthouses and the like.;) :D

If things continue on as they have in Kalifornia there may come a time when the bordering states have their own armed guards protecting the rest of the USA from any and all illegal immigrants originating there. :p :grumpy:
Kalifornia will probably be the first state in the union to issue state identification cards with your own personal ID Number.
The next step will probably be a requirement to get the State ID Number tattooed on the inside of your lip like a thoroughbred horse. :grumpy: :D ;)

Kommiefornia is a hell hole and is absolutely chock full of illegals but why do you think the Minute Men are on the AZ border? Because the majority of the illegals that came into this country last year came in through Arizona. Having lived in California for the past 39 years I have to agree though, it sucks, but, darn it we have the most drop dead gorgeous weather and beaches in the country. That being said, I'm sure going to miss that part when I finally do move out of this place. :( :D :( :D

Agree with Yvsa on Commiefornia. I'm only here because my job is here right now - that may change in a few months to a year. There are good people here but we are greatly outnumbered.

California that bad? Even way up north? I was going to go up towards Eureka/Arcata, about 6 hours north of San Francisco....

Seemed liked heaven when I was there before.. Is it only the illegal immigrants causing trouble or is there more? Interested to know.

I was in AZ as a kid and teenager. Really thought it was something else. Beautiful landscape and great weather .. Maybe I need to bump it up on the list.

Thanks again, everyone. Thoughts always appreciated.

caretaker, caregiver, what's the diff? ;)

How about fishing boat on the North Atlantic? Hard work, but you've never really seen the ocean b4 you've lived on her icy 40 footers...or so Chul the Outlander says...
(buddy of mine..."Outlander" is his nickname, he's an ex-marine tech-writing mechanically-inclined nomad-by-choice...actually works 4 Nintendo right now.)

There is a world of difference between Nor cal and socal.

Most people consider S.F. northern Cal...look at a map guys it's smack dab in the middle of the coast.

It's not the illegal immigrants that are the problem. It's the idiots that control the legislature - that means way left Democrats. Also, in large cities like San Francisco and Oakland it's even worse unless you really like Communism. Los Angeles is also getting worse by the year. The current mayor's race is a circus like performance between two leftists. It will be interesting to see when it's finally settled. Fortunately, I don't live in Los Angeles.

If you can stay away from the large cities, it's not that bad. After all there were enough people to elect Schwarzeneger. At least he's trying. He won in most rural counties, but lost big in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

"How about fishing boat on the North Atlantic?"

Rocking good idea sir! Have known guys who did just that for a summer and loved it. A Google search on 'alaska fisheries jobs' will yield lots of info. This is something I always wanted to do myself
