I've tried to get in touch with Shadetree several times and have never heard a thing. I need someone who does basically the same type of stuff and who can also make custom phenolics that I can think up. Can you guys please recommend someone? THANKS!

If you find one please let me know. I am considering just making my own when I can.

I dont know who else is out there besides myself in making custom laminations now, I sent people to Shadetree and not a peep out of him  and also to The Sun who is in the doodoo house with his customers :thumbdn:...Once my vet bill is paid off someone else will have to make this stuff so I can enjoy my retirement as I was supposed to do:thumbup: I would also like to know who is out there so I can send them business

Well I tell you what broski. If I'm not mistaken, that was you that did the lime stuff for Jeremy Horton right? I absolutely fell in love with it. If you're willing to make more... of anything really, I'd appreciate the chance to buy some from you.

Sweet
if you got info i got ambition !! might be willing to mess around with different stuff as time allows ,i have never done anything like making my own "micarta" but would like to try if you got tech info please contact me..always willing to learn a little more about that kind of thing ,try it test it ,maybe become a producer of it

Dylan I'm really bad at names and I dont keep records of who bought what slabs so I'm not sure.. I have sold a couple highly UV reactive green solid color slabs that look like one and also a few with black layers mixed in...
was it this one?

Pinoy Knife check out the link J. Rosa posted. It's all right there, I just dont know anything about that brand being used for the resin and hardener, I use West Systems.

That wasn't it. I actually just checked and it was another phenolic guy all together. lol. BUT that stuff is cool and I'm still looking for cool custom phenolics.

I just bought a new hydraulic press to make some more custom laminate... used to have a press made of scrap and a screw-jack... it can be a lot of work cutting the thin material and there's a huge amount of waste at the edges but I'll do anything to pay the rent...

I only have a unheated garage to work in now so until I come up with a solution I am dead in the water making stuff or until it warms up. Have only really been making burl type stuff for a while been a long time since I did any burlap. I do have pics that I can send in email.

Please send me some pics Mark if you can. Burlap burl or any burl is in demand over here :D

blue / white, bluejeans and burlap are on my order list to do (all burl style )

Please forgive me if this question sounds dumb. In this discussion are we talking about homemade "micarta" or micarta like that purchased from commercial vendors? (phenolics?)

My understanding was that typical homemade "micarta" wasn't REALLY micarta but rather fabric and epoxy. Is it possible to make REAL micarta at home?

Not really. I mean it is but the up front cost on equipment would be rough. The Phenolic mosty comes in a powder form that has to be mixed with the fabric (or whatever) heated and then pressed under a whole lot of weight. Not really made for a home garage shop. For people that use epoxy to make this homemade stuff (and everyone who does make it should be using epoxy) calling it a G10ish laminate would be closer to what it really is, but for what ever reason calling it homemade micarta or something along those lines just stuck. Some guys on another forum named the stuff I made markarata.

here is a pic of some that got me kind of close to the old westing house colors of rag micarta

i call mine mycarta i think most call it mycarta cause canvas or denim is used not fiberglass liek G10 even tho like said both use some manner of epoxy

Thanks for the referrals, I appreciate it.

Great looking stuff there Butch!

and to anyone else who is interested

I apologize to those who are missing me. The past year has been a difficult one for me with all the transition that a divorce, move etc. forces on a guy. As a result I have been focusing on work that is easier but much less rewarding than making the custom composites. Of all the customer bases that I deal with, The knife crowd is by far the best people to work with. I am sincere in saying that I am disappointed with myself with not keeping up with shadetree composites like I should.

Anywho, I am down but not out. I expect to be back in full production mode soon. I need to, I am planning on having a table at the Blade Show again this year, so I better get crackin' . . .(I need to get my kitchen put in first)

Regards,

-Todd

Sent you one back Todd. I'll also give you a call tomorrow.

I just shaped a handle today out of Butch's "blue jeans mycarta", great stuff. If Butch ever takes to making this stuff on a large scale and word gets out it'll be gobbled up and seen everywhere. I guess that you can tell that I like it.
