Jumped in the lake today and forgot to take out my knife (last time it was my phone so I'm doing alright). Its 440c so I'm not too worried-just want to throw something on it for the night. I've been meaning to pick up some good knife oil to be able to lube it and protect it from time to time. I just want to know a good household oil that I can use that I have in my house right now---heres a list of what i have found. Whats the best of what I have until I can get some good stuff. (and what good stuff should I get that will lube and protect it) wd40,singer sewing machine oil, crisco, veggie oil, olive oil, peanut oil ?????

Wash your knife in very hot water, believe itor not this aids in the dryin' process, kinda works like a dishwasher does in helpin' to dry dishes. and olive oil, 3in1 oil all are fine, stay away from the Crisco.

Well out of those i guess i would go with WD40 or mineral oil. Either will hurt the knife. Generally I dont like to use food products on my knives, although I have heard of it. As far as a good lube tuff glide is good, Finish Line Extreme Fluoro DuPont Teflon Grease in the Syringe is better, and CRK fluoronated grease is the best.

Light coat of sewing machine oil will work. It's essentially 3-in-1 oil and is light enough to penetrate, but won't come off as easy as WD-40. It's also good for cleaning a blade of acidic fingerprint residue. When you go shopping, pick up some good synthetic gun oil for when you want to do a nice conditioning. Use it to follow the thinner oil and seal in the shorter polymers.

Did you mean NEITHER will hurt the knife? I dont have mineral oil. just the aforementioned few.

I have used the search function here and read that alot of people like militec for protection and lubrication and if you email them and ask nicely, they will send you a free sample. I went ahead and did that seeing as funds are kind of tight right now. I am gonna use the wd40 for tonite and hope that militec sends me some to use for a while.

The "W" and the "D" in WD-40 stands for "water displacement". That is what it was designed for. Washing it down with a good soaking of WD-40 will displace any remaining moisture from the swim. Afterwards you can use a lubricant for lubrication and protectant for protection. Many products claim to do both. I've been using 3-In-One oil on my knives because it is really cheap and I already had a bottle.

thanks for all your suggestions. I already heard back from militec and some samples are already heading my way. Gonna use them up, and maybe then pick up some 3 in 1 . will also check on that singer oil and see whats in it. i should probably pick up some mineral oil too since there are so many other uses for it besides on cutlery
