I need to replace my Spyderco! With what though?

What small (3" or less) folder can I carry around for everyday use, with about half seration, opens easily with arthritc hand, that will pass through the not-so-formal-hand-wand-security at theaters, clubs and popping up just about everywhere now it seems? I'm not intending to try to pass through airport or gov security. I'm looking to replace my Spyderco (with the BIG hole that even I can open) that I gave up recently to some teenage security boys outside a theater, of which I STILL haven't quite calmed down about. Especially since the wife and I both have CCL and she passed right on through with her Berretta in her purse! I've been reading some posts and other sites and see much debate about titanium, talonite and ceramic. Seems like titanium would be the better choice (without clip of course). True?

Frustrated and feeling helpless in Houston, Texas...

Do I understand this correctly? You were searched at a (movie?) theatre and had your legal pocket knife confiscated by a theatre employee? Did the theatre have signs indicating what might be prohibited? Did they make no provision to return your property?

I suggest you replace your knife with the same thing and frequent businesses that respect your rights and your privacy. When I lived in Texas I wouldn't enter any business that had a "no carry" sign. The ONLY time I was unable to choose to be armed in Texas was when I went to the IRS office. I HAD to go there but the federal facility had a NO WEAPONS rule.

Ti knives do get picked up by hand wands from what I understand but not the walk through type screening devices. Hand wands pick up just about anything that is metallic regardless of if its magnetic or not. I guess the walk through detectors are based on magnatisim. My word is not gospel on this issue, but I am sure I have seen that info repeated several times around here. At rock concerts this screening is becoming normal. Nothing is allowed in legal or not. I have walked back to my car on more than one occasion at various types of event that you would not think screen. Better than getting something taken away. Another option is to hide it covertly near by outside. under a bush or in some cranny and pick it up after the show lets out. Probably nobody is going to find it. But its sure to be confiscated at the door. Its a rip.

What in the world is going on in Houston? There are no metal detectors anywhere in the Dallas area that I know of...other than courts, airports etc. The movie theater would be buying me a new knife. Now. Or, I would be on every TV channel that would have me. I've been a cop for a long time, I cannot think of a single time when I had to pass through a metal detector Off duty and had to badge them. I agree with others, stop going to places that won't let you carry what you want. And, I can't imagine some security guard keeping something that belongs to me.

You answered your own question... What small (3" or less) folder can I carry around for everyday use, with about half seration, opens easily with arthritc hand, You just described another SPYDERCO.

I'd also check into the "legality" of what you described happening. A proprieter or his employee doesn't have the right to take your property ANYWHERE in the US. He can refuse service MAYBE, but not take your item.

..it sounds like more than just your knife got 'took'...and yes, you do have redress due with the theater manager as well...

Complain, loudly if need be...this time, next time, and everytime!

If it seems that there is just no possible way that you're going to get your knife through...you can leave, and not come back; or, take it back to your car; or, leave it in the car efore you go in...

But, to put it nicely, "You been robbed", and I'd try to get my property back, or get the guard fired.

That said, and agreeing with colobbfan here, sounds you might need another Spyderco...try a 'Q', they're light, and user friendly...

First off, I see that you need to replace your Spyderco. I suggest that you buy....another Spyderco. ;)

houston, I'm afraid that you were robbed. NO ONE has the right to take a 3" or even a 4" knife from your possession in the state of Texas.

Texas state law (Penal code 46.02) allows the legal carry of any knife, with a blade length of up to 5.5", as long as it is not concealed. An illegal knife would be considered as;
1. any knife with a blade over 5.5",
2. any knife designed to cut or stab another by being thrown,
3. dagger, such as a dirk, stilletto, and poniard,
4. a sword, or
5. a spear.

I would strongly advise that you have a talk with the manager of that theater. (To put it bluntly, go raise some hell!!)
I guarantee that if anyone would ever try to confiscate my blades, there would be hell to pay and I would make such a scene that they would be hiding in the restroom the rest of the day because of their embarassment. No carry in government buildings I understand, but open carry in public places is my right as a Texan.

Get another Spyderco. Another suggestion would be the Kershaw scallion maybe. The speedsafe might be easier to open if you have arthritic hands.

Get another Spydie and don't be too upset about the theater. It is private property and they have the right to refuse to admit anything they want including knives and purple socks. Call the manager and explain why you won't be back, but don't expect to get your knife back at this point unless you can definitely identify the person responsible and the theater had a policy to return knives, which they probably didn't. You voluntarily surrendered your property when you chose to continue past the security checkpoint. It's too late now. But your future spending habits can reflect how you feel about the policy.

Go with a Spydie lightweight Calypso jr. or a Dragonfly and slip a few bills under the clip. I'm in a Federal building in D.C. and after a lot of intial foolishness, they have instituted a three inch rule. I carry a CF Dragonbfly stuffed with bills and so far no problem.

Nicely looking, not scary at all, very comfortable to handle and easy to open due to extra-large SpyderHole and additional CobraHood (I would dare to say even too easy), flat ground blade cuts through everything like dream.
A lot of cutting power in small, people friendly package.
BTW, blade length is a hair under 2,5 inches.

And Welcome to the Forums, Houston!

Go back and get the Spydie from the THIEF that took it from you.

I would have contacted the local police over that one. I'm sorry you had to be subjected to such nonsense. The theater owes you a knife.

Makes me angry too

My advice is to go back to the theater where you were
"robbed" by the "security" kids. In the meantime, get yourself
a Spyderco Calypso Jr. from www.eknifeworks.com for $25

Maybe the Kershaw/Ken Onion Scallion is just what you need (as already recommended above) or the Benchmade mini-Griptilian. The Axis lock should be easy to use.

Good luck,
Allen.
