OK, here we go. The Grandmaw, living back in a holler in WV, needs a new VCR. I have heard stories about the new ones not having a tuner. Wally World carries a Magnavox VCR/DVD unit.
If she is on cable w/a cable box and an old tube TV, will she be able to tape all the channels the cable provider has to offer?
Please help me ol knowledable ones. :)

You may not be able to record programming if she has digital cable. SRR is correct about the TiVo, even if she does nto have Internet service, TiVo can use the phone lines to make any necessary connections. Send her VCR tapes and get them transfered to DVD.

A new VCR? How about a new whale oil lamp too, so she can see to push the buttons -- and a new butter churn so she can have buttered popcorn while she's watching her new VCR -- maybe a new atl-atl in case she gets hungry for mammoth.... Seriously, don't get her a new VCR even if you can find one. That is not what she needs. Leave that for the Flintstones.

She should be able to record programs, but if this vcr/dvd player is like mine
(Sony) she will need two Composite (red-white-yellow) cables.

If grandmaw has a view to the south, I think I'd spring for the nominal fee to hook her up on Direct or Dish TV. They provide the tuner with 80 plus gigs of hard drive space to record on. I'd also get grandmaw a new LCD flat panel tv. The savings on the power bill from the LCD rather than a (virtually non reparable) tube tv would pay for it in a year or two.

a vcr can record anything, whether it be digital cable or not. It just won't be digital quality when replayed with the vcr. a dvr would be better for grandmaw.

Many thanks to everyone. Thank you all, I truly love this place. Having said that when Granmaw wants a VCR...

I think I get it. Grandma doesn't want to learn technology. Not uncommon. Just make sure it has a f connector input to a digital tuner for antenna, if that is what she is using for programming.
