You are looking at a 10.75" blade of 1084. We are planning on a lightly etched blade to highlight the temper line and an extra fancy piece of wood for the handle. I am looking for a classic guard style and am open to to your advice.

1. Fighter Guard

2. Oval Guard

3. Single Guard (Camp Knife)

4. "S" Guard

is that Terry's mark?

go with an oval guard that is a decent sized blade a fighter guard would look too small as will a single guard those styles better suited to the lighter quicker pieces.
an S quard would work well too

looking real nice.

Looks like it was quenched in blood. What's up with that? :D :p

Hard to argue with Russ on this one(although it might be fun). ;) :)

Go with the modest "S" guard and collar.

It's a nice blade.

"S" guards have the biggest potential for disaster of any of the guards out there. I have seen many a fine, fine maker mess up an otherwise wonderful knife with a less than perfectly executed "S" guard.

That is if we are all talking about the 3/4 guard that comes down the front.

My vote is for a "bow tie" plate guard and ferrule. Sort of like what Steve Dunn did on that  fine knife with the feather pattern damascus, but a little more classicist, and a little less self-indulgent. ;)

Best Regards,

It's not on your list, but I have to go with C Guard, with a gentle curve to the extened lower arm that matches the curve of the spine in a mirror image.

I don't think any guard you choose could make that gorgeous knife look bad.

Well, if you can forgive the rough graphics and handle shape, the following may help visualise the style, with the final shape and finish to be left to the magical Terry Primos ....

Wow,Pretty cool Stephen. If I were you Pete,I would go for the 2nd or 3rd image. The 2nd image,to me is the Perfect sized S guard. If I were to go for the 3rd image,I would definately go for the Oval shape. The 1st image is Way Too much and Doesn't do anything for me.The 4th image is Too little

The second image is where I'd go with this....maybe a little bit longer "S" so that a big index finger doesn't get squeezed while holding the handle.

I like the first image. With such a beefy blade, it takes this to balance the designs.

Personally, I dislike oval guard. I find them very uncomfortable compared to profiled double guards. Plus, pure oval is elegant but is becoming a bit too commonplace for my taste. If you were to go with a guard carved from a plat piece of material, I would suggest something different - octogonal maybe?
