My edc is a kershaw ram 1910 in my front pocket. I am wanting to buy a knife to carry as a secondary in my back pocket. I can't decide between the Boker trance or the Boker subcom.I have never actualy handled neither,so which do you think would be best for back pocket carry.I dont want it to be uncomfortable to me . Thanks in advance:thumbup:

Different sized knives. What duty would this back pocket knife be expected to perform and how often?

Nothing in particular just things that aren't worth getting my ram out for.So i guess smaller task that dont require such a big knife. My biggest question is which would be the most comfortable in the back pocket.Like i said i have never handled neither.

They have the same thickness of handle but the Trance is a longer handle which would give an average hand a full grip.

The subcom is a subcompact and is about two and a half fingers worth of handle. It would easily fit in the average jeans watch pocket if one was so inclined.

Either can be opened and closed one handed, but the Trance might be easier to "flip" open and close for the unpracticed.

These are my secondary EDCs, and they all work fine for me. I usually carry one of them in my watch pocket or shirt pocket.

I have a Wharcom, same frame as the Subcom, just a different blade shape. The Wharcom is one of the handiest knives I've ever had.

Ok I have the subcom, wharcom, and the subclaw, in addition to both blade shapes of the trance. I say as a secondary EDC the any of the blade shapes on the subcom frame would be hard to beat. They cut like a much better knife and secondary EDC is sort of their niche. The trance is similarly sized to your ram and might end up being too much. As cheap as they are I would suggest you get them all.

the entire subcom family are awesome knives, i carry a wharcom in my back pocket as a secondary EDC, i hardly even realize its there most of the time, and it sure does come in handy especially for smaller tasks and when your out in public around the sheeple :D

Then I would say go for the Subcom. The Trance isn't really much smaller than a RAM at all.

3/8" shorter blade and 3/8" shorter closed length. Although the Trance is very slim.

If you want I can post pictures of them side by side, but you'll have to wait 5 days until I get my RAM for Christmas :D

I just ordered my boker subcom. It was 29 dollars and some change total. Now to wait on the mailman and hopes it makes it here before christmas.:D

I usually like a 4.5" closed or larger for back pocket carry. That way I can constantly feel it knowing that I haven't lost it. My back pocket carry this week was a Benchmade 710 in 154CM.

Well I am a little late but as promised, here they are side-by-side. As you can see, they are very close in size:

HOLY crap!!!!!!!!! That wood grain handle on that ram is awesome.I have the ram in black with stainless blade. I am envious of that knife.I'm a huge fan of kershaw.:thumbup::thumbup:

Just wanted to chime in about the quality and usefulness of the Subcom---

What a knife! It conforms to the hand beautifully, has positive engagement from a VERY stout frame lock, and the composite-based half of the handles are grippy. The blade has great edge geometry and comes from the factory impressively sharp. It's probably the nicest Taiwan-imported knife I own---not that there's many, but I suppose that also includes the Spyderco Sage. I just really like the Subcom series.
