I have a Fish Hunter on the way to Costa Rica now but I could have used it this morning. Landed a big Houndfish and she came to the kayak very hot. These fish are actually pretty dangerous to handle. They thrash around like crazy and can easily leave you with a treble hook embedded in your skin. I've even had them lock onto my leg or hand with those sharp little teeth and had to pry them off with pliers. The worst encounter was when one jumped out of the water at full speed and speared me in the side of the head pushing a treble hook through my scalp with the fish still attached. That was interesting.
Anyway, I like to calm the bigger ones down before I start digging the treble hooks out of their mouth. All I had was the Pacific Salt but it works ok since I've got the spine ground down to a pointy tip. The skull on these fish is VERY hard and bony with no spaces so you have to go through the ocular cavity to get to the brain. Slide the knife in at an angle and lever it back and forth a few times until you find the sweet spot and that's the end of that.
And in case any of the fishermen on here are wondering why I'm bothering with a houndfish, I'll let you in on a secret that not many people know. The roe from the females is some of the best you will ever try. We have millions of them here and they are a real nuisance while fishing but I only keep the big ones that are full of eggs. Delicious.
