I have a Fish Hunter on the way to Costa Rica now but I could have used it this morning. Landed a big Houndfish and she came to the kayak very hot. These fish are actually pretty dangerous to handle. They thrash around like crazy and can easily leave you with a treble hook embedded in your skin. I've even had them lock onto my leg or hand with those sharp little teeth and had to pry them off with pliers. The worst encounter was when one jumped out of the water at full speed and speared me in the side of the head pushing a treble hook through my scalp with the fish still attached. That was interesting.

Anyway, I like to calm the bigger ones down before I start digging the treble hooks out of their mouth. All I had was the Pacific Salt but it works ok since I've got the spine ground down to a pointy tip. The skull on these fish is VERY hard and bony with no spaces so you have to go through the ocular cavity to get to the brain. Slide the knife in at an angle and lever it back and forth a few times until you find the sweet spot and that's the end of that.

And in case any of the fishermen on here are wondering why I'm bothering with a houndfish, I'll let you in on a secret that not many people know. The roe from the females is some of the best you will ever try. We have millions of them here and they are a real nuisance while fishing but I only keep the big ones that are full of eggs. Delicious.

Quite the catch Lance. You're going to have to repeat the catch when you get your new Hunter. We would all like to know.

Awesome! A little gruesome with the blade in the eye, but suppose that is a quick death for the dangerous fish. I remember the old school guys picking up pike by their eyes, kinda reminds me of that.
Looks like some great fishing!

Wow!
Parental advisory: Viewer discretion advised :D

Great catch, awesome pic and story and definitely waiting for you to take the FIsh Hunter in your trips and out there to put it to good use. I can't wait for mine! (not until birthday tho :()

That ought to be the knife for this

Sweet. We only have a smaller relative of it up here, but it is decent eating although some people freak out a bit by the greenish color of the bones.

sg with the fishhunter are ya gonna have any need for a folder while fishing anymore?

Oh yeah, I'll always carry a folder out there but I will have a fish hunter permanently mounted in the kayak...and here soon I'll have my fixed blade design mounted in there too. :)

Yeah, the bones are green but the flesh is white and flakey and quite tasty. I don't typically bother with them as I'm usually catching something better but they are VERY edible!

Dang, Lance, I vote for C & R with those; they can make some nasty shredded wounds, with limited options for repair.
But with the choice in your hands, the Fish Hunter looks to fill the bill.

Now for an obscure film quote for you, hints in the names:

Tuck: "All right, Oz!
That's not Oz. Who the hell is that?
Where's the lab technician?
Where's the lab?"

Jack: "It was just so strange. It was like...
...someone suddenly shoved
a white-hot needle through my eye."
