I Never Noticed These Before (Sebenza 31 Content)

OK. I had to get mine out of my pocket & look. That's what you call attention to detail.
 
Those subtle flares allow the lanyard pin hole to be as close as possible to the end of the handle. Unfortunately for those of us who use the lanyard, this feat of engineering still leaves the lanyard quite near the drop point blade, where it is slowly digested over a thousand years.

It is there on the Inkosi as well.
From what I understand, the unique lanyard pin that Reeve uses is because he hated that most knives chewed through their lanyards so quickly by friction against the scales. The pin lanyard was to avoid this.
I have to believe that the scallops are so the lanyard will not abrade against the scales here and help to avoid the same problem the pin system does.

Makes sense. Though they changed the blade length on the smalls at some point from 2.94 to 2.99. That extra 0.06” mean the tip of the blade eats off the lanyard over time. I carry an older 2.94” and the lanyard lasts and lasts.

Thats a surprising oversight for them. Maybe they weren't moving enough of those replacement lanyards
 
My guess on the lanyard pin vs old style through the hole is efficiency in manufacturing. They can tie bunch and final assembly is faster. That’s just a guess of course.
