I went Antique Shop hunting for axe heads this weekend. while discussing the topic with a shop owner, a guy overheard us and asked me what I was looking for. I told him I collect antique axe heads. He asked "Anything in partucular?" i said Norlund. He said I have one I just finished if your intrested I will go get it. I of course said yes. He came back with this little Norlund head. He said I could just have it. I said no I could not do that and I gave him $20 for it. it is perfectly prestine. There is not one flaw on this head. Unreal.

That is super nice. Any Idea what year that is from?

I bet you're glad you axed him! :onthego:

That's a good score. The Norlund marked ones are older. The ones marked Genuine Norlund are a bit newer. That's a nice one. I had a couple and sold them. Had a nice Voyageur with original handle and sheath. Sold that too and wish I hadn't. :)

Personally, I think Norlunds are overrated. They are extremely popular right now and sell well on that internet auction site. But I don't think they have as good of steel as top shelf axes that sell for less.

They were made by Mann Edge Tool Co., a company that made great tools as well as mid-ranged tools like the later Collins axes (e.g. Homestead). Norlund products were marketed to outdoorsman and they were of good quality. But they aren't great like a Warren/Sager, True Temper Flint Edge or old Collins Legitimus. A Norlund Hudson Bay is better than an import Snow & Nealley Hudson Bay. They're good but they're not great.

I promptly sell those I find because they always fetch a price well beyond what I value them at. I would expect yours to fetch 2-3 times what you gave for it.
