I Picked Up a Couple of Slipjoints, One of Them a Marbles

I traded for a couple of slipjoints yesterday, a new Marbles large Stockman with jigged bone scales, and an oldie that is just marked "Solingen, Germany" as best as I can tell.

I am tickled with both of them, especially the Marbles. It has the best fit, finish, and grinds of any production slipjoint I ever bought. Beautifully jigged red bone, nice walk and talk, and shaving sharp right out of the box, which is unusual for a new slippie.

This one has occupied my pocket ever since I got it, and will probably continue to do so for a long while.

The older knife is a small Stockman that I plan on using for dress carry. It also has nice jigged bone scales, perfect walk and talk, and a beautiful patina to match.

I have been smiling ever since. :)

I try, I try.:)

One of my best friends owns a pawn shop, and he knows about my addiction, so he holds knives for me if he thinks I might be interested. There is also a good, well stocked knife store here in my small (50,000 people) town, and I go there frequently.

I dig through a lot of junkers at flea markets and garage sales to find the occasional goodie. These knives I traded a used Kershaw Boa for. Dollar wise, I might have come out a little short, but I never carried the Boa, and the novelty of it had started to wear off. I also never learned to like that CPM 440V steel. I'm pretty much of a traditionalist when it comes to knives, though I like my Claypso Jr. in VG-10 for its light weight and exceptional cutting performance.

Anyway, I do a lot more looking for bargains than I do finding them. But that just makes it all the more rewarding.

Congrats Coonskinner on the new sharp-pointies! I didn't know that Marbles was putting out a slippie... what is the steel? Do you, or anybody else for that matter, know of a link to where I can see this one?
Thanks, Mongo

Coonskinner:

I was just wondering what the name and where abouts of your knife store there in Salina. I live near Wichita, and get up that way from time to time. Just nosey!

The name of the store is Midwest Cutlery, owned by Jim Magee. He has a lot of customs and a pretty extensive selection of productions. Some time when you're going to be up this way, e-mail me and I'll meet you up there. The shop is on North 12th street here in Salina, just past the jail. It's a little hard to find if you don't know your way around.

As for the link to Marbles slipjoints, I don't now. They put a few of them out in 2001 I believe. I sure like mine. It has been in my pocket ever since I got it. I used it to eat a watermelon, right out in the field just this evening.:)

Sorry for the double post... I forgot to tell Mongo that they are 1095, beautifully mirror finished.

Congrats Coonskinner. I have been wondering about the new ones. Now that it has the Coonskinner stamp of approval I am going to have to try and get one. I think they even made a Dr. pattern :).

Here is a pic of a large Marbles Stockman from the early '90s. At that time Jim Parker had the rights to the name and he had a few made in Germany.

This one has excellent fit and finish too, but unlike yours I am pretty sure the blades are stainless rather than the good stuff.

Coonskinner:

Thank you for the invatation! I will just see if I can take you up on it sometime. Don't know when it may be, but my wife has some family in Belleville, so surely someday I can check it out.

Coonskinner just took delivery of a Marbles red jig bone Stockman (probably same modelyou have)- agree 100% with you, this knife is impressive!

I like that Marbles, and I see one in my collection in the near future. Thanks for the pic.

Those Marbles are sweet looking knives, although I have seen wuite a few that had production looking proublems, they are mostly made well, adn have a good heavy feel to them.
