Man things have changed. I fished a ton when I was a kid and always fish when I go home, but I borrow my fathers kit, or I hand fish.

This is fine, but I wanted to get a nice rod and reel for myself. My father and brother gave me a lot of advice, and when I got home - Tony M helped me out a lot with advice on line to put on it.

Here is what I ended up with.

A Bass Pro 7 foot - 2 piece IM6 rod - Medium Power and Fast Action.

Bass Pro Reel - Pro Qualifier - 8 bearings - no reverse.

Both were on sale for a considerable amount off - so I got out of there for under 80 bucks.

I put some 6 pound Trilene XL on one reel and 8 pound on another.

I am psyched to give it a run tomorrow.

Chris,

Mostly, I don't care - but I wanted something that could handle pan fish, blue gills, and bass.

I am happy with it - I will have to check it out tomorrow on the local pond.

Looks like you've got yourself a great all around setup with that combo.

Congrats and good fishing.

Cool beans, be sure to take pics. Seems to be a good allround set up, I usually use a 6' rod but the 7 can be really handy, especially on more open water than I usually fish. Some people might disagree, but good choice on the 2 piece, I only use 2 piece rods, I am willing to sacrifice a little sensitivity for a more packable rod, one piece rods are the devil in a canoe. :D I also agree on the trilene, all I used till I switched to Power Pro braid. Chris

lol nice set up for a real solid price. you did much better than my pops. me and him and my daughter went to the boat sport and travel show here in indy. i like to fish but mainly hunt, and this dude lol my dad dropped 215 bucks on a st croix rod for muskies. i was like holy shit that is almost a new gun and they don't break like rods lol. he gave me the blah blah blah and we charlie miked but seriously i didn't know you could spend that type of money so i say you did a damn good job of hunting around

Chris,

I agree - this is my trunk rod. I am making a packable rod this summer - likely a 7 piece rod - or a small rod. My Step Brother builds rods - so I am set up there.

Might want to get a cheap rod case or just a piece of PVC pipe and a couple of end caps to keep your rod in. Laying loose in the trunk can really beat up a rod, be a shame to get to a favorite fishing hole only to discover the tip broke off your rod. Chris

I have had that exact combo for a while now and it has held up great for small bluegill and some decent bass. Would def. recommend

Chris,

My thoughts exactly - I am traveling a lot this summer - so I will get one at that time - or if I see a sale from here on out.

You got a good deal there TF. IM6 graphite is pretty good and you were smart to go for a front drag eggbeater. The drag washers are a lot wider and more durable than the rear drags. Keeps the drag smooth with no jerks.(loosen after every trip or they will compress and be jerky)

for the trunk pvc is the way to go for sure but have your wife make a rod sock from a strip of old bedsheet folded and stitched or you will rattle away the laquer on the rods and weaken them. Found that out the hard way on our bumpy logging roads.

cool fishing kits BTW, look well thought out and functional. Used to do that with a longnecked beer bottle for fun. I have 30 yrs of obsessively purchased fishing gear but those containers are great man.

tight lines and sharp hooks!

Thanks for the tip on the drag. I took it out this morning - mostly just to cast and see if I could get the lure wet.

It was fun. I found my local man made pond is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Channel Cats (channel cats in the summer) - so I will be doing some research on how to catch them.

Ask the local old timers what the fish in that pond are biting on. Or better yet watch what they are doing and using. Some fisherman are stingy with advice when fishing their home water....
