View attachment 59948I got my Gold membership this morning. This is the first time posting pics. I started from #800 and working on 1200 sand paper. It took me about five hours. My finger aches. When I finish #1200 the man at the knive store told me to buy something like a tooth paste. I'm not sure what that is, but he told me to buy it and try it. It was quite expensive. almost like 110 US dollars. 13000 Japanese yen. Anybody know what that is ? Do you think I should try that?

I can't imagine tooth paste costing that much. :) It's the gel or paste you use on a tooth brush to clean your teeth. It is a very mild abrasive, so it would put the final touch on the polished surface of the blade.

Find some White Lightning Metal Brite online. It's incredible stuff, even if the rest of the kit I got is crap (the lubricant is just atrocious after a day  )

At least one of these should be available - cheaply - in Japan.

Any of them will do the job nicely.

thank you for the info Mr.Maximus. I'll try one of those and will post pics when it's done.

dude, i feel for you, im working on a tom brown starting at 600 and working to 1200, my fingers are hurtin, your blade looks excellent though.

Are you guys using sanding blocks or doing it by hand? When I made jewelry we wrapped a piece of sandpaper around a paint stick stirrer and stabled it to one of the thin edges. You can use 3 sides of it, one thin for tight areas. When the grit wears off unwrap a layer and you got a fresh surface underneath. Also a lot safer when sanding sharp objects.

I was doing it by hand. I'll try that next time. thank you for the advise. The blade I'm polishing is microtech socom.

Do any of the products, like semicrome ,fitz and all that out the scratches left by 1500 or 2000 sandpaper. I polished my blade, started with 600 and finished with 2000. I buffed it with jewlers rough and now it;s mirror. I don't like it,it looks like a toy. I want to stop at 1500 and just have the 1500 marks left removed, like a regular satin finish. How do we do that?

Grab a scotchbrite pad from the kitchen sink (if you have one... green pot scrubbers from the supermarket) and try that. Should take that mirror finish down a notch without scratching it all up again.
