I posted the following on the CRK forum and got some very well thought out answers. It's only fair to get multiple opinions. I thought I decided against it but something keeps drawing me back to this forum... Anyhow, please read at your leisure and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance:

Hi all, I know many of you have several CRK's and other mid-techs, high end production knives and mainly, experience. For some odd reason, I have been itching to try out a Hinderer. Specfically an XM 18 3.5" flipper. Slicer grind would probably be best for my uses. I do realize that I will never "need" a beefier knife than my Large 21 insingo. But, alas, I am still wanting to try an XM 18. Due to finances (mainly because the wife would flip if I spent that much money on a knife) I would need to trade (+cash) my beloved Insingo for the Hinderer. I am looking for guidance from you folks that have experience with both and may have done something similar to what I am contemplating here. Would you recommend going down this road? Do you think it would be a mistake and I will miss my sebenza? What are your experiences with the two. I don't really want to compare the two, I just want some level headed advice from those who have experienced the same conundrum. Thanks!

Oh, here is a pic of my seb. just for fun. I hope I am not breaking any rules or offending anyone:)

I have both-a few large Sebenzas and an XM18 (3.5) & XM24 (Spanto Flippers). Obviously the Hinderers are much beefier, their bladestock is thicker and they come with a flat grind. So the Sebenzas with their thinner blades & hollow grinds will cut/slice better. Yet, I favor the Hinderers. I like their design better, as it looks a bit more "modern" and less "basic". Don`t get me wrong-I like the Sebenza design a lot, but I like the XM design even more. I also like the fact that you can switch out the scales on the Hinderers, to keep things "fresh". Both are great knives.

Since you are thinking about getting a Hinderer, you should go ahead and get one if you can. I am not sure if I would go ahead and sell the Sebenza for it though. But on the other hand, it would probably be somewhat easy to get another Sebenza, in case that you don`t like the Hinderer.

If I were in your situation, I would probably keep the Sebenza & get a Hinderer. Once I had time to compare/play with both, I`d sell the one that I like less. Though it might be a tough decision to make. ;)

Sell & get the hinderer. If you don't like it, sell and buy one back. ;)

I had the CRK large insignio first, liked it. I had the small insignio next, I loved it. I carry the Hinderer daily. They are all great, but I love flicking my hinderer when I get stressed out and I also like the fact that I can tweak the pivot. Your results may vary, and they are all unique in their own right, but the Hinderer has driven the other two from the pocket. (BTW, I don't clip the knife to my pocket, but if I did, I think I may change my answer. My orange scale also is a positive that is not available in the CRK line.)

It's like comparing high end watches, cars or wines. They are all exceptional, get the job done to the highest standards, but some just strike a pleasant personal chord which makes them special for you.

I would pass on trading a large Sebenza plus cash for an XM folder. They both cost around the same price when ordering directly from Rick. So to me it's not worth it.

I won't go into detail again, but keep the Sebenza, and save up and get an XM later. If you find you don't want to keep both sell one at that time.

i'm kinda in th same boat as you, except i've made up my mind :p
I bought an xm-24 beginning of january and i love everything about it except the fact that due to it's sheer size I wont be able to cary it as much as i'd like. Hence I'm saving to get a xm-18. I am also selling some other knives, including my sebenza. the thing about hinderer is that, just like a sebenza, you have to experience it. It is incredibly smooth, but in a different way. The sebenza almost feels like there is a hydraulic system. the hinderer less so, but more as if you're moving a knife over a block of ice. as stated above, both are exceptionally well made and you can't go wrong with either. That being said, i'm pretty sure you'll always want a hinderer until you have one. I know I have. I've wanted one for 2 years and always the price held me back, but in the end i got it anyway, and i'm glad i did!

Please don't.

You'll find out when you actually get the XM18 that it's worth no more than what you paid for your sebbie. Chances are it's worth less, not on the secondary market, but to you.

The XM18 does have a thick blade stock and beefier handle slabs, but what does these factors mean to you really? I've had both and I personally feel that the micarta inlaid large sebbie fits my hand much better. I prefer the blade shape of the insingo over any XM18 configurations too, more utilitarian and good looking.

All in all, you have one of the best production folders in its best configuration for EDC purpose, I wouldn't look further if I were you.

but of course, if the itch grows too bad, then go for it.

I suggest along the same lines as some of the others here get an XM then make your decision. I have seen some pretty good deals on XM here lately. By a good deal I mean you could buy one and if you decided to sell you could do so and not lose a dime. I personally prefer the XM 18 they are just so solid and well built you have to feel one to understand. There's a reason they fetch what they do on the secondary.

Sage advice and well-said!

You already know you love the Sebenza, OP. Hang on to it and save up for the Hinderer. Good luck! :)

I can't order from Rick. But sounds nice.
I have/had 12 or so Sebbies. I prefer the large size. I have kept only two: a Classic and a Regular, both plain jane models, which I prefer. I've sold the graphic models, the inlays, etc.
I bought a Hinderer 3" slicer and a 3.5" Spanto-blade for about $1400 total. Sold both within two weeks. The 3" was too small; the 3.5 too bulky. I just don't need or want something that heavy-duty for my EDC, even though it is very high quality. My large Sebbie is much easier to carry; less than 5 oz.
I had a new Insingo. It was okay. Sold it. Prefer the standard blade. Actually, my favorite CRK is the Zaan; it's my first CRK and I still have it although I don't often carry it. I guess the large Sebbie is my meat and potatoes.

Keep the sebenza, get a part time job, save cash, buy the Hinderer. Good Luck !

If it keeps you up at night then you might as well start saving. Trading one great knife for another can sometimes leave a hole, but both are better than money so you'll likely not lose a dime. I've always been curious about Hinderer knives and finally got to handle one. Too big for me to carry every day, but would have been one hell of a knife in my gear while still in the Corps.

I wouldn't sell that gorgeous CRK. Certainly not for the chunk of ZT, lol. Unless you are looking at your knife as primarily a self-defense weapon, that CRK gets it done with class and dignity....w/o scaring the NKP. That Hinderer design just seams to shout out 'para-military-prepper-whacko', or any other combination of derogatory adjectives that sheeple will come up with, LOL.
