Three words-

Victorinox
Custom
Shop!

Can you imagine? "Yes, I'd like a blue ALOX Hiker with S30V blades.." ?

Unhhhhhhhhhhh.....:D

Thought about not only that but how about Sal getting together with them to do the SpyderSwiss....

A few weeks ago I put up the idea of a Spyderco and Victoriniox collaboration that the user can swap tools and different levels/styles of blade on the Spydie sub-forum - got a few people to jump in and say oh yes, I'd take at least 2...but Sal never jumped in on it so I don't think it's something they are interested in.

I noticed it was mentioned at least one other time about 5 years ago on the Spyderco company forum but never took off then either.

I think they would sell a ton of them.

This sort of thing has been mentioned before, although more in terms of allowing one to pick exactly which tools one wants in the knife rather than the blade materials. The consensus seems to be that, as cool as it would be, the cost would likely have to be extremely high for it to be at all economical for Victorinox.

I think either idea would be great. I know I would drop $50-100 on a SAK which I could basically design...

I think that were it marketed properly it would do well. I would market it not only through Knife nut channels, but LL Bean, Cabelas, Neiman Marcus, places like that.

Maybe. But given the scale of Victorinox's operations -- the sheer number of knives they make -- I think the cost would have to be significantly higher than the $50-100 price point you mentioned to make the relatively small number of custom shop knives they would sell to knife nuts, etc. worth their while: probably, just as a guess, something on the order of $200-300 (and even higher if the choice also included different blade/tool materials).

And given that one can get an excellent knife in one of their wide variety of stock patterns for a tenth that cost, I'm not sure how many people, even among the hardcore knife/outdoors community, would go for it at that price point.

Yep, they could easily put them in every Target, Gander Mountain, etc.

Everybody wants a SwissChamp in the size of a Camper/Hunter/Hiker...they can set it up for the day or the weekend with the appropriate tools. My idea also had additional scales as accessories - throw on blue, red, or hunter orange G-10 scales or mix it up.

If you could buy the perfect custom SAK, there would be no reason to buy 20 standard models like many of us have done when we are looking for the "perfect" one. So it appears to me that Victorinox knows what they are doing when it comes to business models. I don't foresee a Victorinox Custom shop, but it sure would be groovy. I'll take an Explorer Plus with that stupid corkscrew removed, and with an added saw, please. Or a Farmer with scissors, or . . . .

Dunno, depends on what kind of demand they would have. I can see it were they having to use multiple steels, but if not, the parts are already there.

They're more concerned with guaranteed volume than cost. There's a guy on another knife forum who makes custom victorinox. I believe he was a former highly placed employee. Had quite a lot to do with the limited edition damasteel pioneer (2010 made for 2010)

PS. He goes by the name of Swiss Bianco on that forum and you can 10[SUP]100[/SUP] him. I hope that doesn't break any rules.

Ok, I now need a towel and a cigarette....

I believe there is a large group of Vic junkies who create "custom" Vic Franken-SAKs. Mix and match parts.

As far as Vic doing customs...as neuron says, they would be extraordinarily expensive.

How about a customizeable Vic that retails from the factory for a little more than the standard, comes in three sizes, and allows you to change out pieces simply by removing the threaded pviot pin at either end.

Of course, the pins can only be removed by the special tool, availible from Victorinox for 29.95 plus S&H, and each different feature has to be bought seperately, and then there are the handle scale color options, sharpening and replacement services, and limited edition add-ons, like Damascus blades, which cost more still.

The profit is in the add-ons, not the initial purchase.

I remember from communicating with Roger at Swiss Bianco that Switzerland has a whole mess of laws and regulations that prevent you from modifying Swiss- made goods, and Victorinox is supposedly impossible to deal with (I think is is also because Victorinox manufactures approximately 30,000 per day, that they have no interest). These were the reasons why he had to move to the USA to get his custom/modded SAK business off the ground.

Unless you want to mod your own (which isn't that difficult), you should start frequenting the Swiss Bianco subforum and throw out suggestions there to the collectors.
