I really don't understand selling knives...

If your kids need food, I get it (notice I said your kids)...

I see people on here all the time selling thing BNIB because "it's awesome, but not for me."

I have been involved with multiple hobbies for more than 30 years...the one thing I have learned is NEVER SELL ANYTHING!!!! I am not the only person who has regretted selling anything...

Look, I get that people want the newest and best...I see people trying to fund new purchases by selling old ones. I don't get it. I am not wealthy where money means nothing, but I have learned to NEVER SELL ANYTHING!!!

My tastes always change...sometimes I am looking for something really light, sometimes I want something overbuilt. I have a firearms safe that holds 30 rifles and 25 pistols...I see people complaining that they don't have room for KNIVES!!! "Collection is too big...need some space as this Kershaw Skyline is making me bust at the seams."

Like I said, I am not wealthy...when I want a knife, gun, ammo, or whatever, I save for it if it is not in my immediate budget.

Just askin...why does everybody sell knives?

just because our tastes change and we find newer better ones or ones that suite us more than our old ones.

Same here.

I use all my knives to the point that there are many scuffs and I do not keep original box or anything like that.

even my chris reeve knives.

If a knife is sitting around just collecting dust, may as well send it to someone who'll make use of it and make some money off it in the process. I'm limited to buying most knives off the internet, because there's no place around here that sells anything worth having, and on occasion I'll get a knife, carry it for a little while, and just decide that it doesn't suit me.

Just because its fun, I get to try new knives and keep hunting for the ones I really like. I had never seen a sebenza, strider, or hinderer, in person at a store, how else do I give them a try. With the ability to trade and not loose to much its worth it to me.

As with my guitars, I find exactly what I like and what I want through experimentation. I do not have endless pockets so selling, for example, my spyderco southard will put something that I will carry and use in my hands.

I will say though, I have sold off a few guitars in my past that I could kick myself for, but it has not happened with my knives yet.

Like some other people have said, sometimes my tastes change. If I own something that doesn't appeal to me anymore, why hold on to it when someone else can get enjoyment out of it and I can get some cash for stuff I really want?

Personally I can't justify keeping a knife unless I use it. I also sometimes come across a knife that seems, on paper, to be something I would like. Once I get it in hand I find that I dislike it for whatever reason (e.g. too big, too small, too much like knife XYZ that I already own, etc.) and it would seem a waste to keep it and never use it. In pretty much every case that this occurs I am able to sell or trade the knife for something that I would prefer instead.

Some knives I buy are catch & release for personal preference or performance issues and sometimes I feel the need to thin the herd of knives I have lost interest in and haven't used in a long time. Why would I not want to sell those knives?

Can't afford every knife. Can sell knives to afford ones I've never had. Simple.

So, EldoEsq, what is your reasoning behind never selling anything?

My taste have changed, and I don't want to keep around a knife I know I won't use. Also, sometimes a knife is just not what I expect, so I let it go to someone else. I have also gotten knives as gifts from well intentioned family members that are way off base.......

I still own nearly every knife I've ever bought, minus a few users that were lost in the forest or desert. It's difficult to build up a decent collection if you sell knives at the same rate you buy 'em. ;)

Why does anybody sell anything? Just like how you don't understand why people sell things..... I don't understand your concept of, "NEVER SELL ANYTHING!" I'm one of those people who tries to buy things that has resale value, because it's nice to be able to use something for a while and get half your money back or more. And then using that money to buy something else with it.

IMO the best things about knives... well high end knives is that they either hold their value, or you can sometimes sell them for more than what you bought it for. Unfortunately for me, there are a lot of knives I want, but don't have the money to own a large number of high end knives. So usually in order to buy a new knife I want, I sell off one (or multiple) knives that I like the least. Plus I don't understand why anybody needs 50+ knives, especially those guys who have 50+ low end knives. If they consolidated their collection down to 10, they can have 10 nice knives instead of 50 crappy ones.

And your "NEVER SELL ANYTHING!" mindset kinda scares me..... makes me wonder if you're a hoarder or something.

I have been experimenting with value knives for about 4 years. I have traded, sold or gifted at least 20 knives (mostly my made in China stuff) I am about 3-4 knives away from having what I consider a perfect collection for my individual tastes. I have 70-80 knives/SAKs/sword/machete/tomahawk, etc. My rule that I stick by is no knife purchases over $100. This keeps my collecting relatively under control. When I am satisfied I will disconnect (I will) from the knife community/youtube to avoid further temptation.:(

I'm way too lazy to sell my unused or unwanted knives. I throw them in a box. There actually are some nice blades in there... customs too.

I trade stuff so I can get different stuff. An old story.

Personally I can't justify keeping a knife unless I use it

Everybody does different things with the hobby, and over the years I have changed significantly what I do with the hobby. I think people that buy hobby items because of their passion can also be very fickle- find a knife that interests you, buy it, find out you aren't passionate about it after a few hours, days, weeks, then sell it so you can buy something else. If you catch and release knives frequently you can buy a lot of knives without much expenditure.

Personally I think a collector can buy knives and enjoy them without ever intending to use them. I was collecting custom hunting knives about 10-15 years ago and never intended to use any of them. Now I collect modern folders but I carry all of them. Most of the knives I have bought are keepers but out of up to 15 blades there are 1 or 2 that I find I'm not that interested in and I'm considering selling them.
