First and foremost, sorry for the crappy pictures. I am not a photographer...just an avid outdoorsman! As most of you on the East Coast know, we had a massive Nor'Easter already this year. TONS of trees and branches came down due to the snow weighing down on the leaves still present on the trees. I couldn't think of a better time to test out the new Rodent 9. Most of these pictures were taken with haste as I was on the clock and had a TON of work to do.

I have to admit I was skeptical about the comfort of the new Rodent series handle, but I really REALLY like it for chopping! There is a nice swell at the pommel which allows you to choke back and really get some good leverage while swinging. The micarta also has swells which aids in chopping ergonomics. The handle appears to be almost identical to the Busse Combat SAR series, except of course for the swell in the middle of the handle. For anyone with big mitts, the middle handle swell comes in very handy when choking up on the blade for control. I chopped the hell out of about 25 or 30 massive branches without one edge ding or dent, and the knife is still shaving sharp. Although I haven't done any batoning with her yet, it is still impressive to note that there is ZERO coating missing; two big :thumbup: All things considered, she feels like a heavier, full tang version of the Battle Rat. Excellent knife, and skeptics need to try one for themselves. I can't wait to wail on this thing a little more, and there will be more photos to come. Thanks for taking a peek gents!

Here was a little bonus round for me! We got back to my buddies place, and he needed a giant weed removed from his front yard. He claims he was "too damn tired to chop another tree down," but when he saw my R9...he changed his mind :D We both leveled that sucker in 5 minutes; great stuff.

After all of the abuse, she cleaned up to "like new." Remember to throw some oil on your SR-101 after usage! Sap can really mess up a good edge.

Hey snwbrdr, great pics! I was actually thinking about picking up a Rodent 9 or a M9, and I see you have both. It looks like the blade of the M9 is taller/wider than the Rodent 9. Side by side, the Rodent 9 looks a little -- i don't know -- skinny? Do you happen to know the height of the blades? Thanks!

Nice. First one Ive seen used. Holdin off on mine and waiting for the 711 to whoop on. Thanks for sharing B!

Hey thanks man. The R9 is actually longer than the M9. Its not longer by much, but definitely longer. The M9 feels more like a brush clearing or camping knife, while the R9 is more of a dedicated chopper. I say that based strictly on ergonomics, as the blade profiles, lengths, and thicknesses are very similar. What is interesting to note is that the spine and pommel of the R9 have been slightly beveled, while the M9 has not. Not a big difference, but it does take a bit more time and money to bevel a knife...

Bottom line, I love both the M9 and R9...but the R9 makes for a much better user IMHO. Let us know what you end up going with!

Im looking forward to the 711 too! I have you to thank for that M9 brotherman, cheers Eric.

WOW things are slower than a wet week here at the Swamp  Regardless, got some more crappy pictures showing excellent performance! I had about 6 logs left over from last winter that were covered in mold, spores, and damp bark, and just wanted to get some smaller timber to start a fire. The Rodent 9 split all 6 logs with minimal coating wear and ZERO edge damage; very impressive. To be quite honest, I can't tell the difference between INFI and SR-101 sometimes due to the fact that I feed my cutlery a "wood only" diet. That being said, I have chipped many a Swamp Rat striking a rock, nail, or other formidable obstacle while chopping. Granted you have a decent chopping block, you shouldn't see any edge damage while chopping or batonning. Well thanks for having a look, and long live differential SR-101.

Snwbrdr I think you just changed my mind about keeping the R9, I have been on the fence whether to use it or get rid of it to make funds for another chopper.

I have medium size hands, and the handle bump just doesnt feel right in the normal grip. Choked up for fine work or choked back (is that a term?) with the bump between my index and middle finger for longer reach feels good.

I am excited about the scrapyards 711, and the 911 for that matter.

So many knives, so little cash :(

Posts like this make me want one. Just not sure how I feel about that handle. Wish I could get my hands on one to test it.

The Rodent 9 is growing on me fast. I really like it more than I thought I would.

So they are differentially heat treated?

Thanks for the pics
Al

I am almost 100% positive it is Al. Let me put it through a few more logs and I'll look for a temper line

In this image, it looks like there are the same mill lines as revealed on the SYKCO 511, presumably to provide more surface area for the coating to adhere?
I doubt that. More than likely these are just leftover from the "Ultra Convex" grinding procedure.

Has anyone stripped the entire blade yet? It does look like the SYKCO 511 under the coating.

Ahhh! Now I NEED to know! I'll split the rest of my wood this weekend, and get as much coating off as possible. This baby has to be differentially treated...

It is a fantastic knife and feels so right in the hand. That handle makes me ignore my other choppers. But Eric posted this last month:
The Rodent 911 is through hardened.
Eric

With the quality of steel and heat treat this should not make a major difference though unless its primary use is as a pry bar.
