I really missed my Classic

Last Sunday, my friend, who is a busy mom, told me about how she needed a knife while Christmas tree shopping. "You need one of these," I said, holding up the Victorinox Classic on my keychain. She agreed. It dawned on me she probably would be too busy or forget to pick one up, so I gave her mine. She gratefully put it on her keychain.

That knife cost me $3 used, and it was pretty worn when I received it. As it turns out, after a good sharpening there was much life left. That little guy has pulled splinters, opened bags and boxes, shredded cardboard, removed ticks, sliced open clamshell packaging, cut zip ties, and so on. It's the only knife I pack when I travel abroad for work. Really, this little guy became the knife I couldn't do without.

Immediately after I gifted my Classic, I looked for another one, noticing prices have gone up in the past year. I ordered another used one, this time for $6, and then came the long wait. My keys felt so light and useless. At work, I needed the toothpick for a no-scratch surface, and felt helpless. Today, the replacement arrived, and it was in pretty good shape. The blade was dull, of course, but a little TLC and it's properly sharp. All the blades have good walk and talk with little play. It's money well spent.

I'm on a Victorinox kick... I think I may need to buy some more. They are such good products.

Thanks for sharing. The classic is such an awesome blade, everyone should have one. I work at a restaurant and one of our regulars is a little old lady who comes in for a couple glasses of wine and some chat now and then and she has one on her keychain, we got to talking about it one day and she told me she uses it constantly especially because she has mild arthritis and it's often easier for her to just cut open packages with the classic than to try to tear them open. If a little old lady can carry a knife, why can't everyone!?

I agree, this is the one knife I'd recommend to anyone.

As topic of discussion, what other SAK makes a good partner for the classic?

Vic Pioneer or Vic Farmer IMO. Their main flaw is that they lack tweezers or toothpick, Classic fills that in. Pioneer and Farmer are from the Alox line so the tools are more heavy duty and their tool selections are great. Their only other (small) flaw is that neither feature the small blade, Classic fills that in once again. Those choices are all very important in my EDC system.

I love my classic!

Aside from my Case peanut, it's my most used knife, and most useful keychain tool. I really don't think a day goes by that I don't use the classic for something. Opening a package of some sort, snipping something with the scissors, using the SD tip of the nail file for light duty prying or small screws. It also has picked a few ticks off of Pearl The Wonder Corgi, and splinters out of me.

Because it has become so important to me, I carry it in a leather keychain sheath attached to my car keys. I literally cannot leave home without it. Just the other day I used it to slice around the inside of the cap on some Stabil for the Vespa fuel tank. The foil seal had to be cut out to pour from the narrow spout. The slim blade fo the classic excels at that. Ditto for the foil seal inside the mouth of the Rain-X windshield washer jug.

In the modern urban/suburban surroundings I live in, I can't think of a better under the radar keychain knife/tool I'd rather have.:thumbup::thumbup:

By the way, I like your pair, the classic and companion. Sort of like my classic and peanut.

Yup the classic is the most sold swiss army knife of any model of all time. Easy to see why, tiny, cheap and gets the job done.

My favorite in that size adds one more tool and a pen, the Vic Manager. It's a tiny big thicker, but I do love the little thing.

I think the scissors on the Classic and its siblings are the most precise of any SAK or MT. That right there is a good excuse for carrying one.

I carried a classic in my pocket for over 10 years & just recently upgraded to a rambler.
It's a bit thicker, but the phillips with magnetized tip has proven very handy.

I know exactly what you mean about the usefulness of this little tool.

The translucent blue is on my wife's keyring. The red is on my van keyring, and the green Signature Lite is on my car keyring.
