i really would like to have it:( i actually thought that it would go higher...

These prices are why I stick to the garage sales.
But what the heck pattern is that Kelly? Is it an ice axe? Mortise axe?

I think its a turpentine pattern. But I totally agree, I can understand collectors value, but I myself would never pay that much for a wall hanger.

i would not pay half the winning bid
i will walk out on the limb and say this sort of waste of resources is "STUPID"

hope the winner is real really satisfied with spending $610.00 for a hunk of iron and wood

a fool and his money are soon parted
it's called stepping up

buzz

I hear ya, but if you are a cash laden collector your thought process is much different than the average axe user. People who pay this much for an axe do it as an investment. Literally, there are people out there who buy antiques instead of paying into a mutual fund, or IRA, or speculating on the stock market, etc.

If you had bought a crap load of axes even 10 years ago, think about the appreciation in value you would enjoy to today in the midst of this axe frenzy!!!

Yup--my guess as well. A little too broad to be a mortise axe, and ice axes I've seen usually have a very round edge. There are two variants of the turpentine pattern, as well, depending on the method of pitch collection. One is the style seen there, and the other has a blade shaped like a crescent, which created a broad shallow gash on the trunk. Looks like a broad axe but with a concave bit.

Thanks, guys. I'd forgotten about turpentines. And you're right, the ice axes I've seen have had quite round bits.

It was in my watch and that is about all I can afford to do, unlees I find one that gets over looked but there seem to be more folks coming into this hobby / addiction.

Pat

picked up a turpentine pattern tonight at auction for $1.00
it is really pitted and has no stamping visible

might be able to clean it up but it will take some time and lots of sanding.

never did figure out how to load images but this baby is butt ugly anyway.

M3mphis, you're probably right about the axe craze, but who could have seen it coming?
wish you could've snagged the Kelly Hand Made .

all good

btw, this axe has a very narrow eye

Two guys really wanted that axe & thus the crazy price. That's all it takes for any auction to bring rediculous prices. Nice if you're the seller.....
