I received my first mini-Commander today. The knife is great. The overall size is exactly what I wanted. The only question I have is when the blade is closed it comes fairly close (actually very close) to the liner. It doesn't rub the liner when closing, but the blade isn't quite straight when closed. It seems to go towards one liner more than the other.
My MOD knives do not do this. Is there any way to adjust the pivot in order to get the blade straight?
I turned the pivot screw and that only made the action tighter. It did not straighten the blade location.

I would appreciate some help. The knife is perfect other than this.

Thanks!

hi,

i just received a 99 full size commander that exhibited the same problem. i first did try and tighten the pivot, as the action was initially quite loose. however, doing this did not cause the blade to center, so i took the knife apart for a "rebuild" and cleaning while it was disassembled. i did no modifying of parts, just cleaned them, and did some light sanding to the edges of the scales. when i put it back together......blade was dead center. why?? couldn't say for sure, as i didn't do anything specific.
if you feel competent to do this, it's worth a shot. yea, i know it's new and this shouldn't be necessary, but if you like the knife, you may as well;)

I have not had to do this myself, but others have posted that they either increase the pressure of the detent that on the side the blade is leaning toward, or relieve the the pressure of the detent on the off side, by simpling bending them in or out a little.

Exactly. I had to do this with my Mach 1. Trial and error... nudge the spring, reassemble, try again, etc.

I suspect that failure-to-center is why Emerson had to add the second detent (Emerson is only maker I'm aware of that has this 2nd detent, including custom).

Out of all my Emersons I have moved the detent on two of them, both full size Commanders. Just take the knife apart and slowly move the detent. I move the one on the right side opposite the pocket clip. I have also left them alone as in the case of my 2001 CQC-7 Wave the blade is not perfectly centered but I live with it, and have experienced no problems. If the blade is not rubbing on the liner I usually leave them alone, but if it is really bothering you just move the detent. Part of the fun of owning an Emerson is working on it, and making it yours and being able to take them apart with regular tools is a major PLUS!

just recently got mine too! Very very happy...I have had this alighnment problem before, and, after completely rebuilding the knife, it has been fine. Never really looked into why or how it does it, just happy that it was easily rectified.

By the way, here she is! :)

Yeah, what those guys said. My P-SARK was so uneven that I had to use a screwdriver to bend back one of the detents.

Somebody please tell me what you mean by moving the detents. I'd also like to know if it voids the warranty if you disassemble an Emerson knife.(It does with some other brands) Thanks

The second detent is on the opposite side of the main lock/detent. By disasembling the knife, you can 'bend' the detent tabs to cause more force on the blade, hence pushing it more central I guess.

I doubt very much that taking apart an emerson knife would void warranty. In my eyes, they actually make them with screws rather than rivets so as to actually enable dismantle and cleaning.

WEmerson make working tools, punish the sukkas I say...their after market service is second to none.

If I am wrong about the detent issue, please somebody set me staright...

I haven't taken the knife apart yet but I did spray the entire pivot area out with Mobil 1 Synthetic spray lubricant. After doing this I applied some pressure on the blade and pushed towards the opposite side. With a few openings and closings the centering got much better.
I think that I am quite happy with it now and did not have to take the knife apart.
These mini Commanders are absolutely great. This is the first knife I have actually replaced one of my daily carry MOD blades with. The overall weight of the knife is much lighter than what I expected it would be. The action is very smooth. I'm really happy that Emerson decided to market a smaller, easier to carry in the pocket, version of the Commander model.
If the blade gives me any more trouble I will take the knife apart, but it seems to be fine now.

Thanks guys!

I just received mine last night and it's nearly perfect. The liner moves over a little further than I'd like with a hard opening but it's not touching the other side. There's nothing else wrong though. All in all a great hunk of metal. My girl has already tried to "liberate" this one from me so I just might have to get myself a full-size model.

I had this had this problem on my P-SARK. The blade was being pushed over too far when closed, and the tension that the detent exerted on the blade made the opening action stiff. After I loosened the pivot enough so that the knife could be reliably waved open, I noticed that a point on the edge up near the tip was actually CONTACTING the liner upon opening, causing a chip in the edge. Dammnit. Mine is a green numbered version that I really wasn't planning on carrying or using. (I was gonna buy a plain-edged, black-handled model for that!!) Oh well, after carefully fixing the chip with a sharpmaker rod I took the knife apart and pressed on the secondary detent a little with a screwdriver. Now it's nice and smooth, the blade is centered and is just fine overall, if not mint anymore. The liner also locks over farther than it did before, so that kinda sucks too.

BTW My newer CQC-7B is a little stiff and not quite centered as well, and it looks like this detent is also the cause. Seems like something that might need looking into at the ol' EKI final assembly department if you ask me. (I'm not bitching, just sayin' :))
