I saw a Buck at the resale shop for $45. Sheath knife, rubberized handle, brass tail

It looked like about a 3.5 inch blade with a four inch handle. Full tang to the screw on brass tail cap, with a black rubber diamond plate pattern handle. Any ideas what knife this is and whether it's worth $45?

It looked like a great all around fixed blade knife. I'd be happy with it in the kitchen, the usual letter opening / box cutting detail, etc.

Sounds like a Vanguard with a rubber suregrip pattern. This is likely what you got and has the retail price for your comparison. Go to fleabay and check the used prices. $45 is a OK for a like new knife IMO.

BTW, the Vanguard is a classic design that's stood the test of time. It is highly thought of as a camp knife, general purpose cutter, etc. So it should meet your needs in the kitchen and for box cutting very well.

That's the one. I had a hard time pulling the trigger on it in the store, but I figured it was probably a hell of a knife and a good value on top of it. Next time I head to the coast I'm on it. It could easily replace my ridiculously big ka bar and a couple other dumb knife choices I made lately.

Thanks for identifying it.

It was in fine shape with a like new nylon sheath. Top quality, American made, bottom line knife making.

You will enjoy that Vanguard, PO. As Flatlander mentioned, it is an excellent camp knife that you will find yourself reaching for time and again.
