Coolest thing ever. At the local used tool store, they had one of these sitting around.

They priced it for $250. I wouldn't buy it for that price, but it sure was dang cool. Was a bit tricky to get the rhythm down. Now it's giving me ideas... I kind of want to make something like it, but maybe a version to use 2x72 belts.

Ever seen anything like that? Would you ever use one? :P

Not sure about a pedal one, but a friend gave me a motor driven one before he moved. I think i used to be pedal driven but his grandfather modified it. It has a water tray as well.

Some older guy that lives in the same neighborhood as my future wife has one sitting beside his house.

I think someone here converted one to electric with bad results. The wheel cracked let go

Super scary... can't even imagine what that would be like.

Would it be feasible to make one with some contact wheels, platen, and 2x72 belts? Maybe some gear shifting too to change speeds :P

Check out the green and red cart and accompanying article about 80% down this web page http://thepleasanthouse.com/page/15/. Some guy at a local farmer's market by me uses one of these to sharpen knives. He makes a good buck with it on Saturday mornings. These used to push though my childhood neighborhood.

My grandfather had one, and it is still around and usable. I used to use it as a kid to sharpen my machete and big knives.

My great grandfathers grinding wheel is on the shelf in the shed behind the wood shop. I don't think it was ever foot powered, it has a hand crank handle on the end of the shaft. I guess that's why they had so many kids, get one of the kids to turn it for you!:D

Motorizing a wheel is fine as long as it turns the speed it was intended to turn.
Running one at 1000RPM with a 1HP motor can be foolish.....can't it Sam?

I have one of those seat grinders and an old portable farriers forge on the front veranda. I think I paid $50 for mine.

Im just going by what I was told. Not sure how it was originally meant to be run but you can see the motor (1/3 hp) at the bottom and the distribution pulley (for lack of a better word) at top right. The lower part is to be filled with water and there is a sponge at the top. By the size of the main wheel, I assume it will run rather slow.

The problem is mostly that they are natural stones , not meant for high speed. If I'd known he was crazy I wouldn't have given it to him !!

Don
As to your question,
Have I seen one, yes several times.
Would I use one, Yes to sharpen a knife. No to make a knife.
