That is 100% "The World Beyond", I saw it to and have never forgotten it.

It started JoBeth Willams.

Creepy movie!

Here's a website about it.

Ah, well, torrents are connections to Bittorrent protocol clients, essentially allowing a peer-to-peer connection with other clients such as yours (such as a Firefox Bittorrent plugin). Rather than downloading a file from one central server, you receive the needed bits a pieces from other users, even if no one has the complete file. It's main claim to fame (besides being decentralized) is that it reduces the load on a central server. They are often used to to help distribute large software files such as Linux distros.

I admit to using Bittorrent quite a bit. First, you need a client program. I use the latest version of the original bittorrent, just a nice straightforward program with no bells and whistles; works very well.
There are all manner of torrent search sites; the Pirate Bay is very popular; other good ones are BTJunkie, Demonoid, and Torrent reactor. (there are many specialized sites for different types of material.)

Couple of hints if you want to fool with it. First, you'll likely see several "torrents" up for any popular item. Pick one that has a lot of "seeders" (that is, lots up people uploading the file.) That will result in quicker downloads, and also you're reasonably assured that it's a good quality file.
Movies can be compressed to around 700 MB on average via DivX and other programs and still look pretty good. These tend to be nice, quick downloads.
Often, you can get high-res versions that may run a couple of gigs. Expect to take some time if thats what you want...
Most uploaders now put up movies in nice "CD Image" formats so they're ready to play,
but sometimes you'll have to "unpack" files with WinRar or similar programs.
Another hint, read the comments. Users will tell each other if it's a good quality movie, if there are problems with the file, etc.
Finally, Scan Everything! Although I've never had a problem with a movie or sound file, there's always a slight chance someone has decided to include a little present....
