I Scared Away a Salesman Today

Mods: I figured general was a good place to tell a story. If you think it belongs somewhere else (ie: sharpening) then, by all means, move it.

I recieved my sharpening belts for my 1x30 in the mail today and was anxious to try them out. I have a beat up ontario machete that I figured would make a good practice blade and if I messed up (which I did) I wouldnt have any hard feelings.

So, I go out to my garage, open up the garage door, turn on the radio, and begin sharpening. All my attention is focused on the tiny 1" of belt when I notice a blur outside my garage. I look over, nothing is there, so back to work I go.

Well, maybe 5 minutes later I see a guy accross the street wearing a tie and obviously doesnt fit in. He goes to one neighbors house, then the next. Thats when It dawns on me that the blur I saw must have been the salesman bypassing my house after seeing me grinding away on a machete. I asked my next door neighbor (to the left of my house; the direction that the blur came from) whether or not a salesman went to his house. He said one did. So I went inside and asked my dad the same question (thinking maybe he just went to the door rather then interupting me) and he told me that no such salesman came to the door.

I thought it made a funny story. Have you ever had anything similar happen to you?

If I were a salesman I probably would've skipped your house too :D I definitely wouldn't sneak up on a man sharpening a machete with a belt sander.

Well, something similar except it made me want to smack someone.

I was in the garage with the door open, sharpening some knives. I'm making passes on the honing wheel and my brother in law walks into the garage and taps my shoulder. I freaking jump and almost lost control of the blade.

I was expecting him but he was early and I didn't hear or see him park the car. Man, I could have lost a finger or worse. :grumpy:

He might have seen you busy without even knowing what you were working on. Not cool to walk up behind a man using machinery. He was just being courteous.

Exactly what I was thinking!

Once I was cutting cardboard up, and someone stopped to ask me for directions. I was pointing, "Go there and make a left..." and I saw her eyes get wide. I realized I was pointing with my knife lol

As someone said, sneaking up on someone might be hitting the whup-ass switch before you can say whup-ass. :D

You'd be amazed at how many people do something stupid when I'm working with machinery. I'll have my fingers right next to a table saw blade doing a dangerous cut and all of a sudden someone is tickling me.
This is when people discover that I have a temper.
Unfortunately, hostility is the only way to get some dolts to figure out it isn't so funny.
To those who think it's cute - Do NOT be surprised if you get assaulted for doing something that could result in my death.
So far I haven't had to assault anyone... no guarantees that it'll be like this forever. The older I get the less patience I have for horseplay around machinery.

me - had to air one of my peeves

There are two Mormons that go door to door through our neighborhood every month or something like that. They used to stop by and want to chat and hand out literature. My wife had let them in and talked to them for a bit the first time they had stopped by. This time when they stopped at the door I was busy doing a deep clean on my AR-15. I had it all disassembled across my coffee table watching some TV and working on getting it spotless, when I answered the door...

I guess they didn't feel like talking.. ? They handed me some pamphlet and quickly walked away. My wife has noticed them several times walking through neighborhood, but they always seem to skip our house... I can't figure out why :D

I have placed my sander and power tools to face the wall that the door is on specifically so no one can sneak up on me. Its not an option for everyone as I have a dedicated shed for that kind of thing but so far its worked.

I think that this is a VERY good idea - working with power tools while having your back to anyone that may approach isn't really the best idea, if you can avoid doing that then you should. If you have to face the wrong way then mounting a mirror on the wall could be worth considering.

We have a window parrelel to our front door thats about 2 feet wide and as tall as the door. I remember, when I was younger, my dad liked to clean his guns while sitting in front of the window for the lighting.

Well, one day he is cleaning a glock and the doorbell rings. He looks up and sees somebody standing right out front. So he answers the door and its a salesman but rather then standing at the door as most people would, he was standing a good couple paces back and down the porch lol. He was pretty uncomfortable but still managed to get out his salespitch.

I've told this before on the Busse forum, so it is a re-run.

It was about a week after my heart surgery in 1994. I was sitting in the den in a recliner with my pajama top open. Down my chest was the red, scabby, ugly looking wound from the surgery. I also had three nasty looking puncture wounds where the drain tubes had been. My first Busse knife ever, a large Steel Heart II, had just arrived, and I was examining and fondling it.

My then 13 year old and very eary-blooming daughter walked in with a boy from the neighborhood I had never seen before, and he really loolked a little too old to be hanging out with her. She introduced him. I noticed that he kept eyeballing the knife and my chest. As they walked away, I said. "Son, you should have seen the loser."
I never saw him again.

She laughs about it today, but she was kinda aggravated about it back then.
