The whole bali got red hot and it started to slump, oh well, guess I'll have to get another.

I'd contact BM and see if they would be willing to replace the handles for a lesser cost than buying a completely new knife. It'd probably be cheaper.

Well, if that's the case, you'd better ship that poor 42 to my house where it can be correctly taken care of, nice job with the photo though.

Just curious, why would you torch your 42? To harden it?

The photo looks like a photoshop manip, are you pulling out leg?

You torch them to thermally oxidize them, so you can add colors to the ti.

I'd have to agree, looks fake. Plus, the melting point of ti is much higher than the temp of a normal torch.

Actually it's just a joke, there is really nothing wrong with it. LOL

I don't think a propane torch can get hot enough to begin to melt titanium
biggrin.gif
LOL.

It's fun to play around with Adobe PhotoDeluxe. I don't know if some of you remember a while back a gentleman who left his bali on the dash of his car.....

I did pretty much the same thing.

tique: ya know, I thought about sending it to you but it has too much sentimental value, being my first BM and all.

Dragon1: yeah, I can still manipulate it, I had to bend the handles back to get it to be useable.

Cameron-
that's cool, but I'm gonna have to insist if you can't learn to take better care of your toys.

I knew it was edited; you couldnt screw up a titanium bali THAT much with a torch.

good thing too, because I was getting discouraged about oxidizing mine because of that picture

hey nice photo work.

i was 'pretty' sure it was a fake. my buddy is a bladesmith and i had the pleasure of seeing what happens when Ti burns. i was reminded of burning magnesium..only worse
smile.gif

also, if you could email me any info on 'torching' Ti, i'd really appreciate it. i've got a plain '42 on the way and wouldn't mind personalizing it a little.

thanks for any help.

be well,

rob

I couldn't really imagine Ti handles turning red and slumping.

Yeah, it looked kinda fake, the shape's there and everything, and the distortion looks so cool.

Ha Ha ha Cam, you had some people going!!! (but not me) I saw that and was like what the...!!! I got my 42 RED hot with a torch with no problems
smile.gif
Good stuff... for those of you who were unaware, the reason we torched the handles of our 42's were to "thermally oxidize" them and turn them a bunch of cool different colors.
Cool -- Cool, Cam-

Thanks Malcolm

Yeah, I also got my handles bright red when I heated them up and it really freaked me out, it didn't do any damage to the handles, just my nerves.

If I find a numbered 42 at a knife show maybe I should torch part of the handles so that it's value decreases faster, it's not like the quality of the knife decreases. I probably wouldn't torch the handles since I like the look of the normal silver color then the multi colored (unless I could get black or a deep red which I have been told is impossible

Ti's melting point is 3270`.....You'd light it up in an oxygen atmosphere before it would melt and good luck on extinguishing the flame!!!!!!!!!!

LOL good point

!!

Just for everyone's information burning magnesium ribbon looks awesome! (it is EXTREMELY bright and it will damage your eyes if you look at it too long, just like the sun) it is a very piercing, intense light but it is really cool.
