WELL I WAS SHARPENING MY HIGH POLISHED SOCOM ELITE TANTO THE OTHER NIGHT AND IT SLIPPED OFF THE HONE AND I SCRATCHED THE TIP . I DID IT A COUPLE TIMES.
Does any one know how to get those scratches out?
I have a dremel and lots off attatchments. i tried the felt wheel but no much happened. in fact it made the scratch very shinny. lol!!! do i need some polish or paste? is there a particular attatchment? PLEASE HELP!!!!! I can see myself doing this agian.
my socom is very very very sharp now!!!!!! way sharper than the factory edge.
i read the razor edge book of sharpening and bought hones, a guide and a steel. i was able to shave facial hair with my udt the other night. blows my spyderco 204 out of the water!!!!!!!!!!
anyway enough bragging..... now i just want that flawless shinny finish back on my BREND SOCOM...j.k. i would never do that to a real brend...... it does have a mirror finish though it's just a production knife. i got it in a trade.

Mike,
A lot depends on how deep the scratch is and how "shiny" the finish is on the knife. You need some polishing grease on that buffing wheel in order for it to work. Also, Chances are that dremel tool buffing wheel wont be stong enough to buff out the scratch. The cloth wheels are not very thick, or strong.

I have taken scratches out of blades with real fine sandpaper and a good hard sanding block. Real fine paper is 1000 or 1500 grit and a little water. There is also a method to sanding. you start one way with the 1000. and go the other way with the 1500. What you are doing is sanding out the scratches of the 1000 with the 1500.

What I am worried about is that your finish on your knife is still "finer" that what you can get with 1500 sandpaper.
You could end up putting more but finer scratches in the blade.

Maybe some of the other guys here can give you some more help.

Good luck Jack

THANKS JACK,
THE SOCOM IS VERY POLISHED BUT I BET THAT METHOD WILL WOKR ON MY SYDERCO SALSA. THAT HAS A FACTORY SHINY BLADE. NOT EVEN AS SHINY AS MY SOCOM.

Mike,

For your dremel tool, you could buy some green chrome from one of the knife maker places. The hardware store compounds just don't cut it (pun intended). Green chrome will leave a mirror finish.

HOWEVER, by the time you've removed enought metal to get below the scratch, you're gonna have a visible warp. Plus it probably won't match the rest of the finish.

I believe you will have to re-sand, then re-polish the entire side of the blade. Maybe both sides to get a good match. But then you run into problems of goofing up grindlines and such. (One missed stroke with the sandpaper can ruin a crisp line.)

I'd see if one of the knife makers here would do it for you.

Steve
