I haven't been here for some time and I've just read that a RAT chopper will be produced.

A couple of months ago I bought a KA-BAR Machete Cutlass and for the money the only thing I could fault was the quality of the sheath (well designed but flimsily made). The blade itself was wicked sharp from the box and stayed that way for quite a long time.

Seen with a 9 inch Finnish leuku.

In spite of the fact that I really liked it (the shape, length and handle I felt were just right), I gave it to my sister and brother in-law to use around their cottage.

Having now used a large blade knife for chopping and batoning I actually prefer them to a hatchet (I think they're safer and more versatile). I'd like to purchase another large chopper, the KA-BAR is a really good knife for the money (in fact I think you get a proper bargain) but I would love a RAT chopper to go with my RC-3.

I understand that a RAT Cutlery chopper would be a lot more expensive than a KA-BAR, I can deal with that because I would be buying a product that would last me for years, the quality and materials of RAT Cutlery knives are excellent and the warranty is 2nd to none.

The thing that bothers me is how long I might have to wait to obtain one. In a week and a half I'm moving to Wales and for the first time in my life I'll actually have a day to day need for wood cutting tools :).

So, any guesses how long I would have to wait to get a RAT Chopper?

Until the day that one comes out can anyone recommend any in-expensive large chopping knives?

From what I understand, Jeff, Mike, and Shon have so much on their plate right now, that it will be a good while before the giant RAT (RTAKish) blade is produced. Until then, the Becker BK-9 is one of my top 3 choppers. The value vs cost is terrific. You get more for your money there than any other big chopper that I know of. Also, even though Ontario isn't a favorite name in these parts, the RTAKII (originally designed by RAT) is an incredible chopper. Until RAT comes out with their version, it will remain my favorite giant chopper. I believe that there is even one for sale right now in the exchange on here.

As Dlyan said, it'll be a while.

The Becker line are great.

You seem pretty fond of that Ka-Bar, get another of those to tide you over.

Another fave of mine is the Ontario 12" machete, great budget chopper politics not withstanding.

Tramontina Bolo machete is another great budget chopper with its weight forward design.
