or no luck either way I'll be ordering a new 7 in two more checks, it should show up just before my birthday :D

Last week I went on a dirt bike trip and this is the first time I didn't bring my 2/11 combo for camp/fire type stuff. I've really been liking the 7 for an all around camp knife lately so that's what I took this time along with a hatchet. Long story short fire went down to coals, it was dark and my headlamp was dead, the presplit wood wasn't igniting, I couldn't find my hatchet so I grabbed the 7 and made smaller pieces of one of the pre split logs, while I was batoning the knife kind of flopped flat on the log twice, I didn't think any of it and kept going. Got the fire going, put the knife in the sheath and went home the next day. Today I go to play in the woods and I grab the 7...

Half cylindrical break just like when I hit that pine knot chopping with my 9 except this time two of them, I guess that's what the sensation was when batoning, those two breaks. Thankfully it happen the last night of the trip and I got the use out of it for the days down there.

I feel like I have put the 2 and the 4 through a lot more and they just keep coming back for more. (no jinx) :D

Dayum, those are some big serrations! That kinda sucks, TMI. Other than that, not being any kind of knowledgeable about those sorts of things....maybe it's time for your 7 to meet Mr. Grinder and let him reveal the inner rapier.....Is that the 7 that you picked up at the Spring Gathering (did you pick up a 7 at the Spring Gathering?)?

Tracker mod?

Ouch man, as soon as I saw the title and your name, I new it was a break... I was just hoping it wasn't the new nine.

I dunno man, possibly look up odd shaped historical knives and see if anything inspires you...

Good luck and keep us informed

that's a heat treat defect if i ever saw one... knots didn't help.

kabar should be contacted and give you a new one.

It indeed is sir which makes this sting just a bit more.

I wish I had the skill to reshape a knife other than this current style I seem to be adept to.

I got it at the spring gathering, I wouldn't send it to them that ain't right

warranty is warranty

i wouldn't expect expedited shipping mind you, but they'd want to see this, for documenting their process

really

Aww, man-that's a bummer. +1 to Bladite's HT diagnosis. 1095 is not real forgiving if it ends up being left too hard.
Contact customer service, Northeast knife or no.
If one of mine blew up on somebody I would definitely want to know, and to make it right.

Ok since you both put it that way I will. It just sucks its also got sentimental value being it was my first gathering

Hmmm ... Iooks like a hemispherical lateral transcrystalline stress fracture.

Oh, and Fig Newtons are named after a town, not the physicist.

damn! on a side note your username reminded me of a friend's on a car forum - the mad russian :)

Hmmmmm..... We will make it right.....

I gotta ask - what was the wood you were splitting?...... We're there knots and was the grain pretty complex or did it all go up in smoke?..........

Usually if there is a failure like this the blade becomes bound up in a knot and the steel is twisted and stressed and then a subsequent blow hits the prestressed area and.....oops......

It may very well be a heat treat issue but I am going to guess (guess being the operable word here) that it was a stress issue......

I am sure the folks in Olean will want a peek......

The more experience I get the more I try to find straight grained bolts to baton and the smaller bites I take outta the round I am working on.......

Let me know if I can help........

Ethan

P.s. I have been in similar circumstance and working by feel in the dead of night multiplies the "feces occur" factor by a bunch....... E

That sucks but it happens... I am sure you will be looked after as the damage does seem extreme... As Ethan said it could be a result of stress while batoning. I have not seen anything this bad myself just usually bent blades... Did bend a tops anaconda to 45 degrees ... Came back to about 15 degrees off true lol

Hello sir

It was oak I think and no knots that I was aware of but it was dark. I learned from you about staying away from knots with the 9 when I chopped that frozen pine knot. I don't think it was stress as the blade never bound during batoning just that flop 2x I described and that was first whack for those pieces and I was taking maybe an inch or two off at a time of the pre-split log. Here's a pic of one before it met my buddies splitting maul and the 7 still intact :D

I think they were all the same wood, my friends dragged a few out of the woods with their quads
