I seem to have it backward. I buy a knife and then justify it.

I started out with a very nice "gentlemen's knife" a Shun folder (a blade about 4" long) to cut fruit and veggies. Then I got an Opinel #8, about 4" blade. Life was good, but then I saw a ZT350 with a 3" blade assist opened and I picked it up. It was pretty cool and I figured what the hell I can afford it why not. Well then I wanted a longer folder like the ones I started with so I picked up a ZT 560. Pretty cool knife, but I liked the assisted folder so I decided to get the ZT 0300. I love that knife but now my knives were not only getting longer but had big bellies. I liked the way the drop point full belly recurves felt and looked in my hand. Then I saw the Grayman Satu. Which was like the 0300 on steroids. I knew I would have to have it and so I bought it.

I picked up a couple of others along the way, but you can see the trend toward bigger and thicker and more intimidating. In the mean time, I still use my knives primarily for cutting fruit and veggies. But now I can do it with gigantic military tactical knives.

I am not sure what is motivating me to keep getting bigger badder knives but I do love the way they look and feel.

So I was wondering if any of you could relate to this sort of obsession with big knives when you don't need them. I don't really go camping and I buy all my meat from the Grocery store so I will never cut an clean an animal. I can't even decide which knife I want to carry every day because I love them all.

It feels weird but I read the postings here and see that there are all sorts of people buying and carrying knives without needing them.

I would love to hear your comments and or your story of how you wound up with more knives than you needed if that is the case.

more knives than you needed

Of course. That's why we have this forum. It's like a shrink on steroids. I guess if you're buying more than you can afford...a lot more than you can afford, then you should rethink your problem or find something to sell to pay the bills. I'm just about maxed out, but I have quite a few nice knives, certainly more than I could use in ten lifetimes. I enjoy quality stuff...IMO that's Spyderco, Strider and Chris Reeve Knives. I could be happy with just those guys.

I bought a Cold Steel Counter Tac just for scooping ice cream, and the Hold Out 1 for kitchen duty. Oddly enough they work spectacularly well, but look like something that only a mall ninja would own.

I'm in the same boat. I love huge folders, but on the other hand I carry small fixed blades. It's getting to the point where I spend all of my extra money on knives. I gave up justifying my knife purchases years ago...
