I shortened my Ronin 2 so I can conceal it in Colorado

I have a Yojimbo 2 and love it, its one of my most carried knives for edc. Perfect for Colorado. I like small fixed blades quite a bit and wanted to buy one by Spyderco. The Ronin 2 looked awesome but was to big for me to legally conceal in Colorado.

I decided to buy one and shorten it. To keep it legal it has to be 3.5 or less. So I took mine down about 1/32nds of an inch under 3.5 inches total blade length. That left me 3 inches of sharpened blade.

I used a 2x42 belt sander with a fine belt to remove most of it then finished by hand with 220, 400, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper. I was VERY careful not to get the blade hot. I took my time with it, about 1 second at a time on the belt sander then quickly into the water. I never discolored the metal at all.

The shorter blade does have a little movement in the sheath but not much. I dont notice it rattling or making any noise when on my belt and it seems just as secure in the sheath as before.

I am very happy with it like this.

Came out clean, man! Good for you.

I haven't looked too closely at the Ronin. Thanks to you, I'll probably do that tonight.

I love the Ronin and doubted between it and the Enuff for a wharnie, fixed EDC blade. Ronin was a tad bit too long, I wisj I had the methods and tools to grind it down like this.
Awesome work!

Kept it looking good !
I have a Yojimbo and love it, I've been considering a Ronin. How do the handles compare in your hand, when I hold my Yojimbo I find myself wishing it had a little more handle ?

Thanks! I am very happy with it and I like being able to wear this concealed on my belt.

If you decide to tighten up the sheath to compensate for missing blade here is some fooling around I did with that.

Thanks for the tip. That's a good idea. I have been thinking about using a small piece of leather glued in place. Since its above the blade the edge wont rub the leather. But I will definitively keep your way in mind.

Thanks. I liked it better full size but I have plenty of big knives that I dont use unless I am doing some kind of outdoor activity like fishing, hiking or camping. I will be able to use this much more now that I can EDC it concealed every day.

Looks factory...

Thank you. I tried to keep it as clean as possible.

I wanted to keep the angle on the tip close to the original but I also didn't want to make the spot for my thumb on top of the blade any smaller. So I didn't get it quite as pointy as before but it still has a great point. I poked my self with it several times while doing the final hand polishing. Goes in like a needle.

Thank you!

The Ronin has handles shaped just like the Yojimbo. But they are noticeably thinner and about a half inch shorter than the Yojimbo. After carrying the Yojimbo for a year, picking up the Ronin for the first time felt weird. My first thought was to make kydex liners for under the handles to thicken it up. But it wont fit in the sheath anymore.

I like the sheath and dont want to try loosening the retention by heating it up to fit thicker handles and risk ruining it. Its very secure now.

It also is very comfortable to wear on my belt this thin. Which I am guessing is why its so thin. I forget its on my belt until I do something to feel it.

So I am going to use it how it is for a while. Get more familiar with it and then decide if I want to change anything.

Thicker G10 handles and a custom kydex sheath are tempting though. :D

I took a quick picture for you of the 2 knives together.
