for making an unreasonably dangerous product. i mean, my new native III is so sharp that the average consumer cannot safely operate this tool. spyderco can certainly make it safer. heck, spydie's competitors have been making safer (read duller) knives for years. [/sarcasm]

good job sal!

I had one in my hand at a knife shop here in StL. I put her down (on top of the counter to purchase) for just a second to check out another Spydie. Some guy who had been in the store since before I had walked in picked it. Of course, he opened the box, flicked it open repeatedly and then decided that out of all of the knives in the store that he abused that he had to have mine  I should have really said something....

i was ambivalent about the wire clip at first but have really grown to like it. not only does it not draw a lot of attention, it didnt scratch my vehicle's paint when i accidently rubbed against it.

a sharper knife IS safer.
Period. A well known fact.

just so you know, this was intended as a joke.

i've heard that too. i dont believe it. while a sharp knife requires less force and therefore is theoretically less likely to accidently cut deeply it is also more likely to cut you when you are manipulating, playing or training with it. i think the average consumer is so accustomed to dull knives that they do not respect sharp ones and therefore sharp knives are much more dangerous (for them). how many people here have to warn "careful - its very sharp" when lending a knife to a friend?
a sharp knife surely is safer in some circumstances. For instance, there are many times where having to exert a lot of pressure could result in a severe cut.
however, a really dull knife (like a butter knife) is much safer for general manipulation. the trade off is that it serves its purpose very poorly.
perhaps a more accurate mantra would be "a sharp knife is safer than a medium dull knife" or something to that effect.

Jazzman, look at this way. at least he didnt abuse the knife and then give it back. i assume you just got another, unabused knife of the same model. regardless, it feel your aggrivation.

That is the gist of it. Once you learn to respect knives and handle them properly, sharp knives ARE safer. To me, assuming a knife is NOT sharp is like assuming a gun is not loaded. Very dumb.

Here is my little method of teaching people that respect: Hand them the knife.

Friend: "Is it sharp?"
Me: :D

Usually, that's all it takes. Sometimes I will tell them: "You should assume every knife is sharp, and you won't cut yourself often."

In my experience, most people cut themselves on knives trying to determine whether the knife is sharp. They have no idea how to safely tell. I've seen them run their fingers down the blade and then go: "Oww!:o " All I can do is just shake my head at their idiocy and try not to laugh until they're gone.
