Hello people, basically, i have been thru so many of these tactical/fighting type knives, and i have narrowed it down to three knives, three of my all time fav's.

(REKAT) CARNIVOUR-Love the handle design, great for deep heavy thrusts, the lock is among the strongest, and the overall solidness of this is great.

AXIS LOCK(710SBT)-Love this knife probably the best, the knife is well designed, the lock will last very long, and it's recurve is great.-Allthough the handle is not to great, especially with heavy thrusts.

AFCK-this knife does not need an introduction, this is like one of the best knife designs ever, i don't care-i'd say this is the BEST knife design ever, period. The blade is great, thin edge, nice belly, great edge-nice and thin, but it is a liner lock, and will wear way fast, and it is not even in the same ball park in terms of lock strength, i've tested it, and the afck's locking liner bends all the way, allthough the lock never fails.

Well, see, what really matters in self-defense is the mind set of one self, and also being able to react in the heat of the moment(allthough this is a fight or flight thing, nobody knows what they will do in a life-threatning situation). That being put aside, god for bid i will ever have to use these knives, i want the best. Maybe this is just me, but when doing slashing-and thrust test(on an old WAVEMASTER punching bag, that has about 2-3inch's deep foam all around, the AFCK clearly wins). Why I like the afck the best is because of this, the edge grind/angles are great, the blade is thin, the point is incredibly sharp, and the handle is great, nice and big, and great for thrusts. Also, correct me if i am wrong, but wasnt the AFCK made specifically for self-defense. I can open the afck's i carry so fast, and bury them in a target within one second, this is due to the fact that i've reversed the pocket clips on these knives, and they open as fast as any spyderco now. Overall, i must say, in the end, all that matters is reliability, and the locks on all the afck's i've came in contact with are all great, the locks on the REKAT and Axis locks are really strong, but the overall design does not beat the AFCK's-for SELF DEFENSE. AAAAAArrrrhhhhhhh.....But i am still peeved in the fact that i love the Carni's handle, and overall weight, but i must say the blade is not up to par, -in my opinion, i think it is BETTER TO HAVE A THIN EDGE AND NEEDLE POINT, RATHER THAN A THICK EDGE-CARNIVOUR, AND THICK POINT. Thats my opinion, what do you folks think, out of these three knives, which would you carry for self defense, scratch that idea, heres a situation, and you can only use my three options, either the AFCK, Carnivour, or Axis lock.

Here Goes,

You are in the jungle, dropped off by an airplane, and the folks who dropped you off, tell you they just dropped 5 other guys to hunt you down, using nothing but a Kabar each, and you know they are after you, and you can only kill these people with the ONE knife you have chosen, what knife will that be-and you can only use the knife, don't say some smart-ass answer like, oh i'll carve myself a sword, you can only use the one knife.

Sorry if this was a tad paranoid, but i just want to pick your brains. Thanks alot.

That's a real tuff one! I now own all of the
one's you just mentioned and I like them all.
But I do have to say,The one I do carry mostly
is my A.F.C.K.. It is just the perfect self
defense knife to me. Not that the others are
not. I am just taken more by the A.F.C.K..
That's just my opinion anyway's.

It sounds to me like you really want an AFCK, so go buy one! I carry an AFCK which I'll be replacing with a Sentinel. I have no problems with the AFCK, I just want something prettier without the combo edge and black coating (both are on my AFCK.) The cutting ability of the AFCK is great and it feels solid in my hand in the various fighting grips. Yeah, its not one of the new rolling springy axis rock ultra locks but the AFCK is probably one of, of not the, best liner locking folders out there in terms of how well the liner lock works. The liner on mine does not go all the way over on the back of the blade and in fact engages that part to the left of center. Get the AFCK; it fits your combat criteria better than the other knives (you sound mentally at home with the AFCK, so get one and set your mind at ease!)

I would choose BM 710 Axis Lock for utility purposes and BM AFCK for self defense.

let me make this easy. the emerson commander. faster to deploy, very solid liner lock. trainer is available. sharp as a scornew womans tounge. can do a wave opening on someones face like the spyde gunting. better ergonomics that any of the other knives. carry a delica for utility but a commander for defense.

Well, in your hypothetical situation, I would prefer a nice fixed-blade, but I assume you want to look at folders. Of the knives you mentioned, I'd probably go with the 710, although I would want the plain-edge version if possible. The AFCK seems nice, but I have oddly-proportioned hands and the AFCK handle simply doesn't fit. If I had to choose any production folder, I'd probably go with either the 730 or 750. I like the 730 a little better, but hte 750 would be more resistant to fouling by mud, dirt, etc., so it would be somewhat of a toss-up between the two. Hope that helps.

I own both afck and 710, and I would go with the 710. I just like it better. I really prefer tip up carry and the thicker tip of the 710 and I just have a thing for a tight blade to handle ratio plus I can open the 710 much faster.

yeah shootist, I wish they could make an axis lock AFCK. Doesn't benchmade realize how popular of a knife that would be?

I asked this question Mr. Less de Asis meeting him at IWA'2000 in Nuremberg. He said they are not going so far. What a pity!

I believe that BM would make an Axis Lock AFCK if they could. I doubt if Spyderco will grant permission for it. I have no inside knowledge but that is my guess.

The following has NO known basis in fact, but it DOES seem fairly accurate to me.

In the beginning there was the Spyderco Police.
It had a few flaws. (IMHO, etc)
1. The blade geometry was a little too delicate.
2. The lock was in a REALLY bad place.
3. Steel scales made it heavier than it needed to be.

Along came Chris Carrachi.
I suspect (and have NO factual basis for this suspicion!) that he looked at the Police and decided to "fix" it.
The result was the AFCK
Better blade geometry, a good liner lock (despite all the complaint about liner locks in general.) and G10 scales. He also made a slightly more aggressive cut in the shape of the grip to help prevent hand movement on the grip.

Then,
along came Ernie Emerson.
He looked at the AFCK and said, Nice knife! What would make it better?
(Again, no basis in fact here, just what I come up with while daydreaming about knives.)
He took the AFCK and gave it a MUCH stouter blade with a decent belly to the edge, gave it a grip shape that looks to me for all the world to be the twin of the Carni, kept the liner lock, (if it ain't broke, don't fix it.) and then for good measure, gave it The Wave.
I look at the Commander and see a lot of evolution in it. I still love my Police and my AFCK, but the Commander tops them all.
Opens faster, cuts deeper and feels better in the hand.
Check one out, you'll fall in love with it.

The axis lock 710. Hands down winner. The 710 rules

Ken, please check for Keith Derkatz's (Katz Knives) Special Forces - then you'll see not only BM AFCK inspired Emerson's Commander.
If all Commander's futures inspired by these two knives would be thrown away what would remain? Wave only?
