Ok, we dropped the subject, but she didn't go to my martial arts class to talk to my teacher. :( I'm still scared to go up to her and ask for them again because I want to avoid the topic for now. ::sigh

Let your mom cool down for a while, say maybe a month or so at least, then ask her for the knife back when she is in a good mood and have seen you do something that pleases her. Like getting better grades or mowing the lawn or something that she has been nagging you about. Show her that you NEED the knife and are willing to be good to get it back.

[kidding]Maybe if you tell here you'll stab her if she doesn't give it back?[/kidding]

I was in the EXACT same position when I was younger. I had every knife I owned confiscated at some point and got them all back at about 15 or so.

Hang in there I hope she comes around for you.

Hey GB....

Now I read a little bit about this,, but forget the real details of the matter...

In my honest opinion, I think you need to sit her down and talk about it rationally...

How old are you ??

You have to help her understand what your situation is with knives..

Explain to her your love of knives and the reasons you find it important to carry one...

I honestly feel that we as knife knutts are very different from the vast majority of people.. We all carry them for different reasons I guess, but for the most part the urge or love of knives runs very deep within our being,,to the very DNA,, a primal thing I think...

I found out recently that my Grandfather also had the same passion for knives, and one of his favorite hobbies was to sketch knives on a regular basis... Wish I had some of those drawings now, I'd bring them to life...

Possibly go as far with your mother,as to bring her here, even letting us help explain your situation.

Theres a little boy that just moved in next door.. I think he is 6 or 7... One of the first things he showed me after he moved in was his knives. He had not known I was a knife knutt, and don't believe he hadn't known anything of my knife collection...

He was just simply excited to show me his knives...
Within 5 minutes of talking to him, I knew he was one of us.

My son and I and the boy went down to look at my knife lockup and he just about went out of his mind.. An hour easily went by,,my son was bored and wanted to play PS2. The boy kept asking questions....

I had a bit of a talk with him, and explained that I think he was already a bonfied Steel junkie, and told him to keep collecting, and keep his interest, and some day he would be a knife maker or hardcore addict like the rest of us here.

So go about this the right way, and in my opinion,,I wouldn't sit and stew on it for long.. I like to get things out in the open and get it over with..Do what you think is right.. Explain to her that this is just the begining for you, and that you have a very deep,,serious interest in blades, and that you respect the knife and the powers that come with ownership.. hopefully she'll understand and give them back to you...

If not..Take all of her knives and then do a hostage exchange...:)

Play it right and you'll get your Gear back..Maybe buy her a nice knife as a gift, and get her hooked as well...

Good luck..

Eric....

Thanks guys. I seriously hope she wiped down my Calypso(how badly will VG10 corrode?). Her cut is healing quickly thanks to it being as sharp as a surgical instrument.

BTW: she does not cook in the kitchen often, so those aren't important to her either. (My dad's chef's knife is some swedish serrated blade that doesnt cut very efficiently anymore)
I'll try talking to her when the fire dies off.

Hey GB....

Only you know your mother...

Take your dad's chef knife and have it professionaly sharpened for him...

Show them you have some appreciation for a sharp well kept knife...

Sounds like your mother has had the spyderco bite....Happens alot with spydies....

Tell her she's now infected,, and that she's going to develope a taste for VG10,Micarta, FRN, and Carbon Fiber...

When I first started this sheathing business,, my dad helped me out building some tools, benches and different gear for me....

He said "Your Really serious About This aren't you?!"

Now he comes down in the shop and say"What new knives have you got?"

I just shgowed him a couple new Black Jacks and about 80-90 sheaths and holsters I'm working on... He now knows I'm very serious about it...

ttyle

Eric....

The serrations are 1/2 worn out, entirely. I think I should just get him a new one, but he's gonne be like, stop wasting your money.

A suggestion: you've said you're concerned about the condition of your knives, and I think there's also a concern with your mother having your folders stashed somewhere with the blades open. Ask her if she would at least get the knives out, let you wipe them off and close them for *her* safety, and then you'll give them right back to her for "safekeeping" -- no argument, no hassle.

If she's a reasonable person, she should appreciate your concern for her safety, and the safe storage of the knives. This would be another step in demonstrating to her that you're a responsible, mature person -- and ultimately, that's what it's going to take to make her comfortable with your hobby.

Anyway, good luck, GarageBoy. And BTW, did you ever master the Brownie pop? (uh, but don't go practicing it around your mom anytime soon, OK? :D )

After GarageBoy's threads I really started to appreciate how lucky I am to have a mom who's just slightly annoyed at times with the knives. My mom just told me that if I get A's and high B's on final report card, I get $500. I wonder how that Chris Reeves fella is doing right now...:D

Ha! I actually wouldn't take it THAT far, spending $420 on a knife might tick her off a little.:)

I tried the wiping off and closing for her safety the day that she confiscated them, she was like don't worry about me!
I also don't get rewarded for high grades, except for the occasional cake.
I also never perfected the brownie pop with a knife tha was fully closed.

All I can say is hang tough and someday it will get better. I'm truly sorry things worked out that way for you, I thank God every day I have reasonable parents. The only advice I can give is to let the subject lie for now, hard as it may be. I doubt your Spyderco will corrode too badly, there will certainly be a stain but I don't think it will pit the steel. Five years from now it will simply be a character mark. I know it seems like it will be forever until that time comes, I'm not too far from your age myself. The time will go by faster than you want it to in the end.

GB, I understand your situation and am empathetic, but I just want to know how a minor got these knives without his guardian's permission? Perhaps that's what made her so mad. BTW, my 14yo son gets to make his own knives in my shop.

Good Luck.

Ok, the SAK I got at a dept store. The CRKT and LST I got at Eastern Mountain Sports. The Calypso was from New Graham

garageboy, I hate to suggest this but have you tried the crying method yet? ie. instead of being riled, you act really sad and misty eyed and depressed and not eat etc. your mom may feel sorry for you...I don't know, but it may just work....;)

btw, I think the forumites were just concerned about your parents not knowing you had a knife when one has to be 18 to purchase knives in some states I think....but we know you're mature enough to handle the knives from your posts....actually, I remember your first few posts about sharpening :)

Does the 21 to buy law apply just to NYC? Because I bought knives from a knife shop in Suffolk County, which isn't NYC, and I was only 18. But I didn't get carded or anything either, and I always thought I look young for my age. But maybe the lady at the store just recognized me from when I had gone in with my dad before.

Kind of like my first purchases...

my dad was with me for the first few, last time he was with me at my local I was 15... when I got my first real job(working at burger king), I was buying a knife every month, and sometimes twice a month. They just gave up on keeping track, and I left em in a locked section of my desk.
