I still want to see a Becker folder...

I know there was some talk of this in the past, and Mr. DawsonBob had a pretty sweet rendering of what he thought it could/would look like. I would still love to see a project like that come to fruition.

I know many of you EDC smallish fixed blades, but I still like a good sturdy folder. I can't think of a better company to provide a hard working folder than BK&T. Maybe it's just wishful thinking...

Is there anyone out there besides myself that would proudly pocket a Becker folder?

I agree 100%! I think that we may have a better chance when the tweeners come into play.

After seeing what ESEE/DPX did with the HEST folder (almost indentical in size and shape to the original) this is what I am hoping for with Becker.

The smaller fixed blades I still prefer as an EDC for when I'm not at work, still have had some issues with the fixed blades AT work, so I carry folders when I'm "on" and would highly prefer a Becker folder!

You want to believe it buddy. A Becker folder would be a dream come true.

I have actually spent the better part of the last 24 hours trying to find a big thick folder to carry. I hate that so far I have found little that really fits what I am wanting, but I know that if Becker made that folder that we have floating around here I would have had no questions about which one to get. Hell, if it was put up tomorrow, I would buy it tomorrow, provided it gets a good beefy blade.

A folder is ways off. The tweeners need to do well. Building a folder is quite different than building a fixed blade. Kabar would have to completely retool for it. Beckers are American made, so outsourceing the project would keep the costs down, but go against the ideals.

Who knows, someday maybe, but not for a while.

I really want a CampFolder, in the worst way, too.

BK14 as a folder would be pretty nice.
until then, my Kershaw Rake (also made in the USA) is doing a good job.

Damn straight! Where's that folder, dawsonbob?

Current largish EDC folder is a Sydie Manix Sprint Run. It's OK, but dawsonbob's design would be better.

Yep...USA Made! I'm ordering a Spydie Manix 2 and chose that over the Perrin PPT simply because the Manix is USA made (colorado made in fact...Woot).

Couldn't agree more! I've been looking at the proposed Izula folder and that thing is sexy as heck. Give me a BK14 folder - and I'll buy the heck out of it.

i think Ethan is carrying a PhatBob these days (among others), which is funny, cuz that's like my current next folder. great minds or what?

now, if Ethan could convince KaBar to let Chris Reeve be the "outsource" for a folder design... Chris's folder know-how, and a blade design by Ethan, but with say a reasonable 1095 steel, and not impinging on the Sebenza lineup...

i mean after all, if you want a folder than can defeat Godzilla, the Sebenza has a good pedigree :)

Oh, yeah - I am eagerly awaiting the Izzy folder, too.

I think the PhatBob is a great lookin', hard workin' son of a gun! It's big and appears to be sturdy. Plus, I've heard great things about the sharpness right out of the box. My only complaint (and it is very minor) is the pocket clip. It looks sort of...I don't know...out of place maybe?!

Here you have a really sturdy looking folder, and this teensie-weensie looking pocket clip. I don't know, maybe it just needs a little shape to it... But like I said, it's minor. I'd still carry one...

ETA: Oh yeah, anything in collaboration with Bob Dozier can't suck either...

Ethan called me a few weeks ago, and one of the things we touched on was producing a folder (I, of course, am partial to the one I designed :D).

At the moment, producing a folder — any folder — is problematical for several reasons. One of the biggest is that producing a folder — any folder — here in the US is an expensive undertaking.

The big problem here is that it's difficult to produce a folder of the quality that Ethan demands, at a Becker price point. Yes, KA-BAR could tool up and produce a lesser quality folder . . . but they won't, because that's just not how they operate (thank goodness). They could tool up and produce the kind of high quality folder that would satisfy Ethan (and me, too, for that matter), but it might be outside the Becker price range. What to do? Well, they could always go offshore to China to have a good quality knife made at a Becker price, but would that be in keeping with the Becker way of doing things? Ethan wants to keep the Becker line all USA made, and I'm certainly in favor of that.

I have to admit that I have seen some very high quality knives made in China (actually, I own one), and I'm tempted to say yeah, let's go ahead and have some folders produced over there so we can have some good, beefy Becker folders, but that's really just because I want a big Becker folder.

But would that be in keeping with the things that Ethan (and all we Beckerheads) want? Probably not. Fortunately, Ethan has very clear visions of what the Becker line should be, and he wants to keep everything made here, by KA-BAR.

All this is somewhat moot at the moment, anyway, because there are simply too many new and exciting things in the pipeline at the moment. I can't speak for Ethan, of course, because I don't know exactly what he has planned, but I suspect that we'll all have to wait awhile for a Becker folder. But someday? Who knows what someday might bring . . . or when "someday" might arrive.

Hi, Doc! Glad to see you here!

I posted a thing a little bit down the page talking about folders, and why there aren't any (yet).

A lot of us would like one, but it'll have to wait awhile. How long? That's anybody's guess.

Thanks for the kudos on my design, though. Maybe someday . . .

/me copies design and gets one custom made. :p

Your design was good, but it would be hard to produce at a Becker price point with the Becker quality. Hopefully it will come out down the road. Hopefully...

Thanks, Game. I thought it was a nice design myself.:D

If you want one in the near future, you'd have to have it custom made — there are too many irons in the fire at KA-BAR for them to worry about making the folder for awhile.

Actually, the design itself is pretty simple, with almost all the parts being laser or water cut, with a little CNC milling thrown in. Even then though, it's not as simple as a fixed blade, and requires more tooling up,assembly and finishing. Like you said, bringing it in with Becker quality at a Becker price point may be tough to do.

Down the road though . . . well, we'll see.
