Hi all,
I mentioned the other day about finally getting a good edge on my Buck 110. Some had mentioned stropping. I have wanted to try it. So tonight I got out my belts that seem to have shrunk over the past number of years. Picked out the one with the best leather and cut a piece. Well I have stropped about 6 knives so far. Really does not take to long and does make a big difference. I do not have any compound on my strop yet. But even with just the leather, it works great. And I really enjoyed doing it. I did not do my Buck 110 yet. I need to go get it and see what that comes out like. It is not hard at all. If you have not done it yet, do it. :D:thumbup:

I don't have a strop either, so I usually use a belt or some leather boots. :D

Stropping really does work like a charm. I just bought a pair from a fellow forumite. Very nice pair.

Try some compounds and you'll like it even more. I remember when I first stropped I was stoked. Congrats.

+1 on that. A little green compound does wonders.

i made my own strop today too.
i'd tried just plain belt before but this time i added a little compound. you're right, it is addictive. Finally able to whittle hair!

For a stropping compound, I use Bon Ami, Old Dutch, or Dutch Maid household cleansers. Do not use Ajax. It's way too agressive. The three I mentioned are very mild abrasives, really just polishing compounds. Talcum powder will also work.

Funny how belt shrink isn't it! Lately I've been noticing they are making pants smaller :D
34's even quit fitting.

I have to look into this more. I have been using a whetstone and then arkansas forever. Am I in the dark ages? I am afraid to use diamond for fear of too much stock removal.

Very interesting!

I like the idea of getting stuff done with thing one would already have around the house or on their person. Personally, I've been stropping on my jeans since earlier this year, seems to take an edge sharpened on an 8000 grit ceramic that little bit further.

Please post which belts are involved in said shrinking....I have seen the same issue recently, and want to confirm trend before I complain to the maker of faulty belts. My belts seem to have been made by a company called "Quiznos". Thanks.

Im glad for you. Ive seen my grandfathers do this since I was extremly small so it komes naturally. Impressing job to do last finish on a edge without the strop. But the strop is a shortcut.
