I went to lunch today and stumled on a store that sells knives that I had not known about.
They had a decent selection of KaBars, a few cold steel, BM, Gerber, SOG and Spyderco.

And then in a corner of the case were half a dozen various stockmen. There was at least two Schrades (8OT) a Western (#742?) stockman, another smaller Old Timer, and two Camillus stockmen (#22? & #69?). I didn't get a real close look at all of them so I may need to go back. Each one was priced from $25-$30. I bought a Camillus Stockman that has a 22lr bullet shield. The finish on the ends is a little rough but otherwise it is nice; I liked the shield. Should I go back and get the Schrade 8OT instead or should I go pick up all of them for the heck of it or are they overpriced?

Bill, take a very very close look at the tang stamp to see where they were made. If it's not old stock of knives made here in the U.S. of A, don't bother. All are companies out of buisness exept for the made in China clones.

Yep.

.....but, if they're the USA-made knives, snap 'em up quickly before we find out where that shop is! ;)

Jackknife,
They all say USA but now looking at the Camillus I picked up it may have been slapped together as they were shutting down or something the grinding to even out the bolster and liners at the ends is very rough.
I think I will go back and trade it for one of the Schrades.

The Camillus that you bought should be from the early '90s,they are nice knives,I have one along with a few others from that series. The others that you have listed could be priced a bit high, compared to ebay prices but 'til you tack on the shipping most would be in the ballpark. If you were to go back for the rest, make an offer on what remains, you may get lucky.

Notice I have given no clues where it is. I was thinking of snatching them all up and maybe seeing if any of the folks here at TF&F want them.
The owner told me he got them from a dealer that was retiring.

Unfortunatly, products made in the final months of a companys existance, when the employees know they are going to be out in the cold when the doors close in the near future, don't have alot of incentive to do a very good job. The QA on some of the final Schrades and Camillus knives were terrible.

I was thinking maybe $100 for the rest of them; 5 knives.
Did your Camillus have a bit of a rough finish on the ends?

The blades look great with a very consistent grind and the springs and scales look great too but the finish on the ends of the bolster and liners is a bit off.

You may truly have found a cashe of old knives left over from some dealer. In that case, don't waste time.

Let's see, we'll just put your name up here on the blackboard next to smiling-knife. Thats Oakland, Right?:D:D

There are a few guys here that are in the Eastbay. I will be happy to tell where the store is but only over a beer.
But I think I am going back to get most of them today.

Update; I went back and exchanged the Camillus for a US Schrade 8OT. The finish on the Schrade was a lot better. The one odd thing is the handle does not have the Old Timer markings but rather has a shield that is best described as a circle overlaying a rectangle and the scales are all black. Is this a typical version of an 8OT? I need a camera.
I am still contemplating going back again and getting them all.

Is the Camillus stamped Rough Cuts? I have one, and while its a fine knife, doesn't hold a candle to my older demo folders.

The Camillus only said Camillus USA. It is back at the shop as soon but as my buddy pays me some cash he owes I may go back and get it.

Billym,
That 8OT sounds like one of the Copenhagen editions. Does the tang say "cope" where it should say 8OT?

Eric

EA42,
No there is no "COPE" just 8OT. The shield's shape is like the London Underground sign but has no other markings. Did I get something that was "slapped" together in the final days? There is no + at the end of Shrade.
Bill

If you get all of those would you be interested in trading for an 02 blue bone seahorse?

I'd be interested in that camillus with the 22 shield.
