I've been a slipjoint guy all my life and besides a couple tactical knives while in the Corps I have remained so. Then I find Bladeforums and decide to get a locking folder EDC. Took me a month to decide and it was the Para D2 that really got my attention. Never really liked the looks of Spyderco, but the more you know the more you realize what they are. Come Christmas I needed some stocking stuffers and the Bug looked good. Then I realize that while I cherish the Para D2 as an EDC, I may want to keep it limited duty as they are getting a bit expensive so I needed another EDC and traded a slipjoint for a Delica 4 British racing green and FFG blade. Sweet! Light, great lockup and easy to maintain. What's next?

If you are a FFG blade type of guy take a look at the Caly 3. I like the G10/VG10 model better because the handle has a better (rougher) grip texture.

What's next?

Meanwhile I have around 40 Spydies. In general my preference is for European knives, except for Spydercos - I love many of them.

My recommendations:
For midsize knives:
- Considering you have a slipjoint background, you owe it to yourself to try a UKPK. It's a great knife, and if you'd want something cheaper, well a more midrange and much cheaper variant will come out in a few months.
- If you'd prefer a locking Spydie in that size then have a look at the Caly 3 (very similar to UKPK except for the lock) if you like backlock or the Sage if you like a great liner lock. Delica is nice, and I think that Caly is something else still.

For bigger models:
- have a look at the excellent slicer that is the Chokwe. It is actually much better in the hand than you'd expect when seeing it.
- The Centofante 3 is also a superb slicer, one of Spydercos best ones in fact and it's pretty affordable.
- Eventually you'll want a Military. They're all great!
- you can still find the special Volpe if you search around - it's lovely I think.

For smaller knives: interesting to know is that Kiwis and Kopas are being discounted. Both are excellent, I prefer the Kiwi, others may prefer the Kopa.
The Urban is a great smaller slipjoint, the small brother of the UKPK. I have the wharncliffe one. Lovely and it won't scare too many people.

I will finish with one particular model that is perhaps the one of all my Spydies I would select if i could only have one: the Stretch 2. I have the CF version, the cheaper FRN handled one should be great too. The ZDP steel ones have a flat grind. I think it offers the perfect combination of qualities.
Watch out with the ZDP steel: it's very hard so don't let it get dull between (rare) sharpenings and keep in mind it's only just stainless so wipe it dry after use.

+1 on that. I liked the G10 Caly3 so much I bought a 2nd one about 2 months after buying the first. I plan to use the first one and wanted a backup since they've been discontinued.

I recently bought a couple of Dragonflies, one FRN and one G-10. Great little knives that feels bigger in the hand becasue of the ergonomics. Good size for light to moderate EDC duties. I really like them both but prefer the more grippy G-10 as well as the fact that the G-10 uses screws whereas the FRN version uses pins.

bigmo66, my experience with Spydercos is quite similar to yours. I've always liked traditional knives a lot more than modern "tactical" knives (still do, from an aesthetic point of view). I thought Spyderco made some particularly ugly folders, until I started using one I got for a great price from a store that was closing.

Now I've got a few dozen, and keep finding models I like.

I prefer FFG as well, besides the excellent Caly 3 I'd also recommend the new Native 4. I got one recently and like it a lot.

Since you're a slippie guy, the Spydie slippies won't scare you.
My personal favorites:
G10, FFG, Wire Clip, S30V Made in USA with Sal's logo on the blade: UKPK, it's SUCH a nice knife
CF, S30V, Made in Taiwan, with Bob T's logo on the blade (and name on the clip): The Bob T slippie is such a SUPERBLY finished knife, I love it, and it is a small bit more traditional looking/feeling IMHO

Spyderco Stretch II(any version), IMHO it's Spyderco's top knife. You should also try something in H-1 Steel, maybe a Pacific Salt. Their hawkbills are fantastic, I just picked up a Superhawk and I love it, it's a really useful blade type. I'm glad you enjoy Spyderco's knives, there will be many more to come.

I used to hate Spydercos because of their looks when I was younger, I wanted a fancy knife. Now that I'm older and actually use them all the time Spydercos are the greatest. They focus on ergonomics, quality and material more than looks.

I bought a P'Kal and was so impressed by the quality and materials it almost made my Benchmades look bad. Now Spyderco is my main brand and I just bought 3 in the past week and ordered another tonight.

At first glance spydercos are ugly, once you use them they are beautiful. With the realization that they are such great performers with surprising eurgonomics you find yourself wanting more. Speaking of spidie's my E4W should be here in a few days :)

I have never been a fan of spyderco knives even though I know they are great quality knife. With that being said I really like the Spyderco Military, only thing is it is basicly the same knife as my 710 in size and function

I used to big Benchmade fan , now my table full of Spyderco , playing with orange MILI right now :D

I tried to like Spydies, I really did, I even have 20+ knives to prove it. But... it never happened, Benchmade is the brand for me. Kershaw is very close second.

And you've got quite an impressive collection of them too!! I was a Benchmade guy, back in the BM 800/975 days, but slowly gravitated towards Spyderco. What can I say, Spydercos probably appeal more to me because they are more like me, ugly but functional.:D
