Hi people,

I recently got a new Super Karambit. As soon as I got the package I opened it and spun it around on my index finger and began giggling because I loved it so much. A few seconds later my arm got itchy, I looked down to see a massive gash in my forearm. I mean there was meat hanging out, I didn't even feel it happen, the thing is like a damn scaple its so sharp. I went to the hospital and got 9 stitches and my wicked Thor tattoo now does not line up at his cape (doctors are not artists). When I got home I ordered the Emerson combat systems karambit training videos, but I am afraid of this knife now. I cannot find a trainer Super Karambit. The videos only use the Combat Karambit. I think this knife is too big. The little difference in blade length between the two Karambits is small, but for such a precision tool its huge.

I can find Combat Karambit trainers, not Super Karambit Trainers. My poor tattoo, I paid $1000 bucks for it. I guess this is an excuss to get more tatt work done to fix it up. :)

hehehe, got bit eh?

sorry to hear of the injury, i too have been gnawed on by my Emersons, esp after stropping.....

The combat karambit will cut you equally as well.

No doubt about that. I just think that since the only trainers around are for the Combat Karambit, as well as the training videos from Ernest, that you can get more realistic training with the Combat Karambit. If you train with a Combat Karambit trainer, but you carry a Super Karambit, when the time comes to use it the longer blade will throw you off your training and you cut your own wrist......anyone know where I can get a Super Karambit trainer?

There is not a super kerambit trainer, only a combat kerambit. You may just have to make or get one made if you want one the exact same shape.

There is also really no practical use in spinning the kerambit. I have been training for years with the kerambit and have been told by more than one SE Asian teacher (not a DVD) to work on how to "loose and retract" the knife quickly and not waste my time with the spinning and trying to look cool.:)

I don't know if I agree with #2 if you want to do it seriously you need to use a live blade as often as possible.
Using a trainer all the time can cause you to pick up bad habits, I only use a trainer for actual 1on1 contact sparing.

Just to reiterate, spinning is a practically useless skill to develop. Not necessary, regardless of how flashy it looks in the Emerson training DVD's(I got them too; was disappointed to learn that there wasn't anything new in them for me to learn:().
I got a Super Karambit blade stuck in my wrist once; it sucked. It DID teach me about the dangers of spinning, and sparring taught me the uselessness of spinning.

The spinning is touted as a just a "distraction" from some folks and others actually seem to think it's used for strikes.........

Any one who has actually trained full contact with kerambits quickly sees how useless spining the kerambit is. Even extending
and retracting is something that should really only be done during lock up IMO.

I train in Minangkabau pencak silat and would NEVER spin when sparring. I can spin all of my karambits with my eyes closed, and I carry an Emerson Combat Karambit every day. IMO if you really want to spin them, once you get good with a trainer, you can spin anything, but it has NO combat value.

Also picked up the Super Karambit. The thing is-it's not your knife until it bites you. I was spinning it, very nice balance to the knife. My 10 year old ask to see it and cut himself while closing it. He smiled at me and said "it's mine now". Lost my last new knife the same way. I should never have told them about that rule. Anyway, he's happy and I'm in the market for another Emerson. Best wishes stay safe.

Although I think you are all right about there being no true tactical value to spinning the knife, I think that spinning will help with the development of attributes and sensitivity which in turn will allow the user to know where the blade is in his/her hand at all times. You are right tho, its all for show if doing it in a combat situation.

To be honest not really, there is no harm in sitting infront of the TV playing with a kerambit but don't kid your self that it will gain you any sort of kinesthetic development.
You should ruddy well know exactly where the knife is at all times. It should be wraped tightly inside your fist, not flailing around the place !

I don't mean that to sound as harsh as it might, I'm just being totally honest :)

hmmmm.....

i wonder if i know of someone who does fabricating and could make a trainer blade for a super kbit......
