Hi,

After not having the best experience with a Super Tinker, I think I may have stumbled upon the SAK that fits me. A Soldier. In one weeks' time, it seems to have replaced all the folders that I've been carrying. Even my much beloved stockman pattern has been abandoned to the desk. :(

Last night, I actually put my Scallion in my pocket with the full intention of carrying it for a trip into town. But, when my Wife and I got to town, I reached in my pocket only to feel the checkered grips of that Soldier. And it was right and good that it was there. I think if I'd have known about this knife 40 years ago, there would have been a lot of knives that I wold never have bothered to own!!

There is something soothing about having an alox quitely soldiering about in one's pocket...
The Soldier, none tougher and robust; the Swiss has had no equal in producing top quality for that price.

I carry a Wenger SI (Wenger's version of the Soldier, and just about identical in everything other then it has a bale), and it is definitely a workhorse. It is a tank of a knife, without alot of weight. Pockets well, handles great, and works like a mule. I like having more then one cutting blade, just in case, but I have to say, when I carry my SI, I feel like I can take on the world. Great knife.

It's very hard not to love a basic sak.

I preffer a lanyard attachment, so I carry a Wenger SI alot of the time. It's the most like the scout knife my dad gave me at age 12.

if I want something more compact and lighter weight, I carry a Victorinox cadet 2, also a checkered alox handle knife. GIRLYmann is right, there's something comforting about alox sak's. Like a worry stone in the pocket.

Of late, I've been carrying an alox bantam, the most minimalist alox ask. It's so thin it disappears in a pocket, but has great utility in a small thin package.

Alox, the only way to go.

They are identical because both are manufactured to Swiss milspec. Because I am a compulsive about dummy cording, the Wenger bale is an extra well worth having, although the Soldier is a little more pocketable. There is a version identical to the Soldier but with a keyring attachment. Although the Pioneer is an acceptable compromise, sometimes when cutting, the keyring stud digs into your palm. A shift of grip usually takes care of things, but it's an annoyance not experienced with the Wenger.

If I could find a deal (the ONLY way I buy a knife), I'd grab an SI in a heartbeat, but Wenger doesn't seem to have that kind of presence in the market.

Hi,

Dantor, it wasn't a "bad experience" as much as it didn't work for the way I wanted to use it. It was a bit on the lite side for my way of use. I did write a review of my week with it. Search back a page or two. I don't fault the tool, it's very well made and capable for what it can do.

I guess I can't say that I like bails or lanyard rings myself. I tried carrying an Imperial Scout Knife many years ago. The bail always seemed to be in my way. I gave it to my Father. He still carries and uses it to this day.

What boggles my mind is how fast this knife "bonded" to me. I no more than removed it from the box and I knew it was special. It makes me feel like I could fix or build anything with it when it's in my pocket.

I honestly don't think I'll get another SAK. I did get three, A Super Tinker, the Victorinox Rescue Tool, and my Soldier. I really think I don't need to look any farther for my best choice. I think I could live with just the Soldier as my only knife if I had to. I like it that much!!!

I gotcha ;)
I have my Farmers, several even but what I edc everyday is my Champion Plus;

maybe to big for some, but it's just right for me and everything I like about SAKs, tools!

I got a Soldier about a month ago, to 'replace' my Farmer in EDC. I'm happy I did. Although I still like the Farmer, too.

I'm fond of my SI too - I got it in a trade with another forum member (one of the best swaps I've made). The scout pattern of tools is the perfect balance between multiple implements and pocketable minimalism.

I recently removed the bail on mine after snapping the blade shut on it and dinging the blade (again). It would not be hard to reinstall it or an alternative if i really felt the need for a dummy cord though.

I've done the same. The blade kept getting dinged up by being closed on the bale. I know it's my fault and not the knife's, but I removed the bale. I don't carry it as much anymore, since I carry my Swisstool all the time and it has the same tools as my SI and more, but when I did, it was sans bale.

I love the Soldier / SI family . Recently I have fallen under the spell of the Cadet an Bantam . They go well with light summer clothes .

Hi,

I have to admit, it was my 14yr old Daughter that got me interested in SAKs. She bought herself a Cadet about a year ago, and she carries it often. I figured if it was good enough for her, Dad should have a SAK of his own too!:)
