I have been looking for a better anvil for some time now and had concidered buying a brand new one b/c I was having trouble finding anything in good shape.. Today however I was able to pick up this #278 Trenton anvil for $350.00.. It has a few chips on the edges but it is nice and flat and has great R/R.. The guy that I got it from has about 40 anvils in a barn and I had to talk him into selling me one.. He wouldn't part with his best ones (I guess that he would rather let them rust away than sell them  ) Are Trentons pretty good anvils ?? I'm no expert.... what do you guys think???

Are Trentons good anvils:eek: You funny guy:D Hay-Budden and Trenton are two of the most popular USA made anvils of all time, according to what I have read.

That is a kickass anvil you got. Great deal! That would probably bring around $600+ on ebay.

Way to go! Trentons are great anvils. That is a beauty, and at a great price.
Congrats!

My wife has a friend who had us over for dinner one time.
I noticed on the way up the drive that he had the best looking anvil I had ever seen sitting out in the yard.

I had to know if he would be interested in selling it?, but he said that he wants to hang one to it because it will look very cool sitting in the flower bed...

sitting in the flower bed.....

Thats all he wants it for....just to sit there...

Nice haul, What are the dimensions on that beast??
Mine was roughly $200 but it's one of those cast ones with hardened surface plate n horn type...no problems with it though...other than its taken me a month to find someone who's willing to sell me a log to sit it on... Picking it up tommorow..the farmer has both birch and oak, What should I go for??
I'm thinking oak...lovely rough bark :)

And another thing... that sorta set up looks familiar...

hehe... I bet you love your lil 'un almost as much as I love mine...heh...they bounce around if you're doing anything heavy but good for stamping,or brass/copper work, aint they? :)
Did you make that one yourself??!!

Allan, I know what you mean, a week after I bought mine, a distant uncle informs me he's sourced one of similar size, with the original stand for $80... and he's going to put that in his garden.... genius! :(
I might offer him double that though..wouldn't mind me a couple of anvils
placed about me like tin drums... DING DING DING ;) hehe

It really annoys me when people bury history like that, I was outbid recently on ebay for some 1850's forge bellows, by a few pound... scoped out the winners profile, only a bloody dealer... just know those are going to be stuck in some silly show home and not in use :(

Horrible deal Louis, so horrible you're going to have to send it my way and trade for my smaller peter wright.

My uncle retired from a steel mill and bought the anvil he used from the Co. at auction for $350. I asked to buy it from him. No way he wanted to leave it out in his front yard to remind him of work. Must have really loved his job. I wound up getting an even better one from my wifes grandfather. #250 fisher, made in 1908. Has great sentiment also. Best of all it was free.

The anvil is 13" tall and the face is 5 1/2" X 19".. I won't be carring this thing around any more than I have to !! I can't wait to get it mounted and do some forging on this big beast !!!

Nice find Louis  Dont feel bad about that price either, that's exactly what I paid for mine.

Gotta have the OT
Xanadu here I come ;)

thats a great anvil louis, i know a guy in n.c that has 52 anvils in his shop just laying on each other in the dirt and wont sell none. he has anywhere from 110lbs to 502 lbs and only uses 4 of them. and he has 8 6'' post vises that he never uses and wont sell. great find latter boo

I hate guys like that..The good thing is that when they finally croak the kids will usually be in a hurry to sell them all off.....so there..:D

40+ anvils just sitting there in a barn!!!!!!!. what a waste.they could be just sitting in my backyard. man; fourty anvils. just the words give me a touch of the thickness.;)

Maybe "Dad" ,if he knows what he has, is saving these anvils as an investment for his kids inheritance. .

I met a guy down in Madison, Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River, he is a blacksmith, been doing it for around 35, 40 years. He now only has 35 anvils and won't sell a one :grumpy:
