And it's not wnat you think.

I like wine.

A lot.

But lately, after about one bottle, I start feeling extremely warm, getting short of breath, and get red blotches all over.

But even that's not the problem.

The problem is that I sort of like it and want to drink more to see where it's going. Is that f**ked up, or what?

My wife and I typicaly go through a bottle of wine a day. When I am visiting my parents, like I am right now, my dad and I go through two bottles. We prefer red wine during the colder months, or with red meat. When it is really hot, a good Chardonnay does the trick.

wow. Sorry to hear that. Probably a good idea to as your Dr. I know certain types of allergic reactions can lead to airway obstructions. Does it happen with all types of wine or just certain brands or colors?

This is normally a white wine thing (I can't finish a nice bottle of German Riesling while still maintaining respiratory function). But this evening it jumped to red, starting with a bottle of Rancho Zabaco Dry Creek Valley Zoinfandel. Curiously, now that I've switched to Folie a Deux Amador County Zinfandel, the symptoms are subsiding. I'll probably never really understand wine.

My wife reacts to wine, but it's not blotching. If you're experiencing blotching of the skin, and any itching sensation, it is time to consult your doctor. Does this happen with any wine? With alcohol in general?

About my wife, her skin turns red overall, and her eyes become glassey. It doesn't take much wine for this to happen, but she can handle a lot of wine. My dad drinks a lot of wine, and plenty of martinis. Yet, I have never seen him drunk. It seems that when we have too much alcohol, we simply sleep.

Some brands have more sulfites than others. A doc I work with gets the full raging headache and everything, almost an anaphylactic reaction, so I've seen it before. The breathing thing is the biggest concern!

Interesting. I have a frined who developed an alergic reaction to kiwi & honey dew in her late 20's. Each time she tried one of them the reaction got worse until she darn near couldn't breathe. So now she avoids them like the plague. Maybe look at the ingredients and look for the evil variable.

I wish I was your cousin or something so I could get invited to the hunts and stuff. But that's beside the point.

How do you feel about cheap hot spiced German wine like they serve in the Christmas markets? Gluhwein is a good thing. IMO.

John, it's gotta be an allergy. It'll either take a lot experimenting on your end (which could be fun, but then again, might not be) or some allergy testing to figure out the culprit.

Caveat: I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Motel 6 once.

Here's what looks like a blog post with 242 responses on wine allergies. Some interesting ones in there.

It's usually a white wine thing. And, as the stuff I posted after you posted this suggests, it's not specific to any particular variety. The Zin I'm currently drinking (like almost all reds) has no effect. Except for being happy-making. But that last Zin had me gasping for breath.

Normally, it's a white wine thing, although today it broke into the reds for the first time. No itching, no glassy eyes (as far as I know), but there is an acute shortness of breath. It's never happened with anything other than wine, and I assume it has something to do with the sulfites. But whaddaIknow? Ordinarily, I can drink pretty much anyone under the table, but I think two or three bottles of the right wine would leave me rolling on the floor gasping for breath.

But again, the part that really worries me is that I opened another bottle to see what would happen next. It just turns out I opened the wrong bottle and nothing happened.

ETA: Yur wife is an android, is she not? So what could that possibly have to do with me? Unless...???? Do you know something????!!!!

Yeah, I had an allergic reaction, seemed like every time I took a drink, I'd wake up in the Maricopa County jail , never did figure it out.

I did often wake up to a puffy face, swollen lips, and large bruises around my eye's, if they weren't swollen shut...

Darnedest thing

What's stranger, is it hasn't happened since September 3, 1983

24 years ;)

Well shoot, your problem is easy. Styay out of Phoenix. It'll probably prevent you from waking up in that nasty pink underwear too.

I understand - it has been quite a time for me too - thanks to the Wisconsin Dept of Transportation. They helped me volunteer to quit ;)
