Hey everyone hope you are well
First and foremost when buying a knife think of it as an Investment. Buy a good knife and take care of it and it will last a lifetime.
A knife is a tool which should be carried by everyone no matter how old or young. Give the young ones a Swiss army knife it will get most jobs done
I can tell you a very good knife that starts from $25 all the way to knives that are $300 each is very different. Something on the lower price end you can use till your hearts content as a good solid knife, and not have to worry about losing it or breaking and chipping. A knife which is $300 is a knife which will truly last a lifetime with proper care and it is basically a Rolex of knives. (The real one)
The fit and finish and also the warranty and the materials are the best around and will make sure this knife last you many many years to come.
I can also tell you exactly what knife to buy, but i would be making a very big mistake on my part.
Each person carries a knife for a different reason, work, small chores, self defense, food preparation. Since i do not know for what reason you are carrying a knife ex: opening mail, food preparation, cutting boxes, and etc i can not tell you what kind of knife will best suit you. Below listed are some of the best knives money can buy and are listed because they are the best in their respective categories. Small folders, large folders, Self defence, Fixed blade small and large, Best Fit & finish, Toughest, Everyday Utility, Ergos, Steels, Warranty.
I will make this very cut and dry and base it on my opinions. Price and Quality

GET A SPYDERCO SHARPMAKER (This system is idiot proof) $40 - 60 you can not go wrong
These are my opinions, and though i maybe a stranger to you i wish you the best. After a bit of buying ccc type knives (cheap, Chinese, crap) i have learned these knives are cheap and are not worth even trying. Any specific models i have listed are ones I know personally as being the best in their class.
When it comes down to it buy a good knife & take care of it you never know some day your life may depend on it (Military, Police, Firefighters, Emt's & even ordinary individuals)
take care and all i ask from you is one favor. Please vote for this guide if it was useful to you so others may see it and not waste their hard earned money.
