I think I trashed my Esee-4 blade

Trying to sharpen on a Lansky. Couldn't get an even wire around the curve. I don't trust that thing anymore, my stones are finished. Where do I go from here? Sharpmaker with diamond hones to reprofile?

Its very difficult for me to help someone onljne fix a knife.

sharpmakers work, but would take a very long time to profile.

it would be easiest with cheap 200 to 400 grit coarse stone and carefully push edge on correct angle on stone, lifting handle slightly as you near the tip to get that angle.

dont put a lot of pressure, itll grind deep and hard to fix.

It's 1095, benchstone, freehand, practice.

Yup. This.

Also, the reason why the Lansky wouldn't give you an even edge is because the edge angle varies wildly over the stroke--your real angle will depend on the width of the blade, where the clamp is affixed on it, and the actual shape of the blade. Basically the arc of the stone doesn't match the shape of the knife, which means your angle changes at nearly every point along the stroke. You get a very consistent stroke but massively inconsistent edge angle.

Sharpmaker with diamond rods OR with progressively finer sandpaper taped to the rods.

I agree with freehand BUT it does take practice and some guys take to it more naturally than others. If you've never seen it done, look to Youtube for good videos.

Personally, I have no interest in clamps. DMT fine/coarse butterfly and my Spyderco DoubleStuff can take care of maintenance or repair but it took me a while to get good at it.

Don't worry, its not trashed. Several good suggestions above

Lansky only works well for me on my smaller folders. I'm looking at some combo waterstones, maybe a 800/4000 and a 1000/6000. Time to learn freehand.

Is a stone holder essential?

Stoneholder not essential, but good to make sure it doesn't move around.

As starter, checkout this:

Then this sticky:

And crazily easy method the video discussed here:

Knifenut1013 has a very good Youtube on his sharpening a big knife, Becker if I recall correctly, his Youtube handle is MrEdgy81.

Lastly, the washboard + sandpaper might also work as well, plus the concept is interesing and the tutorial is great:

Hope it helps!

You could convex it. I had a really dull Spyderco hawkbill that I could saw on my fingers and it wouldn't even leave a mark I didn't have the course diomand rods or any of that fancy equipment nor did I want to spend the money and wait a few days for shipping so I convex'd it. Just put some sandpaper on a mouse pad and strop it along.
