I think I'm in Trouble

I picked up my first Sebenza, a used small Classic with African Blackwood inlay, about a month ago. I was very pleased with it right out of the box. I had to sell a few to pay for it but it was worth it. To my surprise it has grown on me even more since then. I started out rotating it in with a few of my other favorites but for the past week or two it's all I carry. It's made some of my other knives feel a little coarse by comparison.

Now I'm staring at my few remaining favorites, a ZT, Benchmade 581, a couple of SOGs, and wondering if they need to go so I can afford a large Sebenza. To make matters worse I really like the feel of the inlay--the way they make the handle feel more rounded--so I'm thinking I probably "need" a large with either wood or micarta inlay. This could be expensive.

I guess the bright side is that I don't mind a well-used knife and I don't collect. I continuously sell off the knives that fall out of favor in order to try new stuff. I really think I'd be satisfied with one large and one small. Of course that Nyala looks pretty cool--despite the fact that I've never carried a fixed blade in my life. :)

You think you're in trouble ? We here all know you're in trouble. :p:thumbup:

"I really think I'd be satisfied with one large and one small." Lol That's what i said 4 CRK's ago ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Then again maybe I'm just weird but it actually causes me a little stress to have to pick through a bunch of nice knives to decide which to carry in the morning so I've actually found that the fewer I have the better.

I've found the same thing with watches--I used to have a couple dozen and now I've pared them down to two or three and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. When I get bored with one I sell it and buy a different one.

I think what it boils down to is that I really enjoy *using* nice gear as opposed to *having* nice gear. That's just me though and I know a lot of people derive a great deal of pleasure out of collecting beautiful knives, watches, fountain pens (another weakness of mine), etc., and I think that's pretty cool. We're all just wired a little differently and that's a good thing.

Never ends. In the early stages of the disease, you are happy with one. Then you need the other size. Then you learn about regulars, damascus, BG42, inlays, limited editions and graphics. Just when you think you have enough, you start liking Mnandis. Then all of a sudden , the Umnumzaan is introduced. What abou the cute little discontinued Umfans. (don't know how to spell this one.)

This is something I run into with all my hobbies. Once you taste something high quality, the rest just becomes junk. After buying both a large and small sebenza, my large and small ritter grips (still practically new and in great condition) are just going to collect dust. Same deal when I bought my Omega Speedmaster. Bought a lot of cheaper watches before it, now they're all just junk I don't care about.

jwrussell, you are indeed "in trouble", and you will love every moment of it and each new CRK aquisition that you decide upon. It never ends. Not for any of us. Should you have any hesitation about aquiring yet another Chris Reeve Knife the "Family" here will offer helpful encouragement that will enable you. Welcome, to the wonderful world of Chris Reeve Knives! :)

Yep, sounds familiar. I guess the difference for me would be that instead of sitting around collecting dust I just sell stuff off :-)

I've never been drawn to custom knives but I *thought* I had some pretty decent production knives. Most of them now feel a little rough in comparison. There's something about the lines of the open Sebenza as well. I don't know how long it took him to come up with that design but that upper silhouette just looks amazing. It has a really cool visual balance between the blade and scales.

Like knives I've never gone for *really* high-end watches either, but my first Omega (SMP) helped me to understand the draw even at its midrange price. Same kind of design and build quality feel to it. Kept that one for a long time and then sold it and bought an Oris, which I kept even longer. My good watch is now a Fortis MM and after a year I haven't started to get bored yet although I do think that next up with be an XL Omega PO (the Speedies are awesome, too!).

Yeah, I'm hoping that acquiring a large Sebenza will be all I need..... for a while ;)

Congrats........I too have went down a similar road. I started out my CRK buying with several One Piece Knives. I looked at the folders for years and then right before Christmas many years ago, I scored on a Large Regular BG-42. It was my first sebenza, first CRK folder period. After carrying it lightly, I bought another Large Regular in S30V and had CRK engrave it for me. That was pretty much the end for me. I have since sold tons of "Other" knives to buy more CRK. I have sold the likes of Hinderer, Strider, Buck, Case, Kershaw, Gerber, and so on and so on. I have tried others like Hinderer during my big time buying days, and as nice as they are, I still come back to CRK. The reasoning, I can have 3 sebenzas for what 1 XM cost. And they are even better.

I have bought and sold CRK to by others from CRK as well. Some you have and you see your not using them, so you sell them to fund another you wanna try. For the longest time I had a personal policy. I would Only SELL a CRK to Buy Another CRK. The reasoning: Anytime I sold a CRK for another brand, I always regretted it.

Welcome to the world of CRK......!!!
