About a month ago, I decided to experiment without a clip on my knives. I removed the clip on my Obenauf and my EDC William Henry's. What I found was that on my very small knives, the WH Kestrel & Monarch, I missed the clip. I don't use it to clip the knife to clothing, but the clip gave me additional purchase on a small knife. I liked the additional grip.

However on my larger knives, the small Obie Model 2 and even the Lochsa (that I just got 2 weeks ago), I like going clipless. I don't think they'll make it back on the knives. Not only do I like the look, they just feel better in the hand to me. Given that I rarely used the clip, they served very little purpose for me.

So, for these larger knives, I'm going clipless.

Congrats Patrick. I usually go with a leather pouch more than anything anymore ffor my large folders.

That's the route I've been thinking as well.

I just received the Clip Case & Slip Case made by William Henry. Small leather pouches, one has a clip, the other doesn't. Unfortunately, even their largest size (designed for the T12 series of folders) is a tight fit for my Lochsa. However, I wanted black leather so I figured I'd try WH.

Here's the WH pouches. I found the clip case (left image) in black.

I've since ordered a similar pouch from CRK, this one designed for the Large Sebenza. I figure the fit will be a little better for my Lochsa as its dimensions are closer to a Large Sebbie than they are to the T12 William Henry. The CRK pouch doesn't have a clip (my preference anyway) but it's brown (not my preference).

Here's the pouch from Chris Reeve. Should be here in a couple of days.

If you know of any others I could try, please let me know. I'm thinking of contacting one of the forum members who works with leather to make one. I just don't want to send out my Lochsa to get that perfect fit! I couldn't bear to be away from it for that long!

I have often thought about going clip-less as I agree that the knife is more comfortable in the hand and has a cleaner appearance. But I am very fond of having the knife at the top of my back pocket when I need it as I find this more useful and comfortable. When I carry a knife loose in my front pocket it invariably falls horizontal, which I find rather uncomfortable. I have use a leather case which keeps the knife vertical, but takes longer to deploy and adds thickness. In the past I have sewn a small pocket into my front pocket just the right size of my current EDC, which seemed to work quite well. This was in the era before clips. You may find this helpful. Just my thoghts.

Hi, my name's Brian and I've been clippless for 2 years. At times I have to were a clip, but that's becouse my pockets (or lack of) aren't good for clippless knives. I have a half sheath that fits most of my folders that has a space pen and surefire E1e clipped to it. Keeps every thing in that pocket where I can find it. As I've said befor "Yes, I have a knife (or two). No, I don't need to advertise it."

Hi Saberman,
Do you have a picture of the half sheath you use?

I gave up on clips after scratching the front edge of our new kitchen counter. My new Spyderco Native arrived from Walt at Spoon River Cutlery yesterday and the first thing I did with it was remove the clip. Oh, and that knife is sharper out of the box than any other folding knife I've ever bought. A slightly toothy edge, but insanely sharp.

Shalom,
Mark

Clipless is definitely my preference for the past few years. I just put the knife in my right front jeans pocket or in my rear jeans pocket behind my wallet(depends on what knife I am carrying). It is a little bothersome when the knife falls horizontal but less bothersome for me than using a knife with a clip. Anything larger than an Spyderco Endura would wind up in a sheath on my belt. Another thing I like to do with the smaller edc's is to use some leather lacing and add a knot to them. Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that I am not alone.

I have, and actually carry(!) a Benchmade Forum knife. Until the other day, I had never snagged the clip on any of my knives on anything. So, the other day, I got out of my car and snagged the clip of my Forum knife on the rearview mirror and pulled it clean out of the pocket whereupon it fell to the concrete. I was amazed, there wasn't a mark on it. Anyway, my other plain-jane 705 has no clip and that's the way I'm headed with my other knives as well.

edited for bad spelling

I love clips on my production folders, and I'll have one clipped to my right front pants pocket, but ever since my first custom folder it's been, "No Clips...no holes...Please!"
Art Washburn made my first custom folder with Devin Thomas "Raindrop" pattern Damascus, and beautifully matched stag scales. Would you drill holes in the Damascus or the stag? I wouldn't. I had Art send the knife to Gary Gralley for a sheath when it was finished. Gary also did my next custom folder, a Stag & Stellite from Kit Carson. "Lifter" Dave is doing some nice sheat work also.

Clipless here. I would only put a clip on a knife for specialized carry, like IWB.

patrickb, no I don't have any pics of my half sheath sorry (no digi camera). Imagine, taking one onf the WH sheaths without the clip cut it in half, sew a pocket in it to fit a space pen, clip the E1e to the other side, and find a knife that fits... Hope this helps.

Another has fallen into the fold after seeing the light. :D

I am always surprised at answers to a gent's knife that include a clip.
Something about slacks with vertical front pockets and clips that just does not go together for me (and cliping to horizontal back pockets does not do it either.) A larger folder with a clip is handy, but for me when it comes to use, I just do not like the feel of that darn clip attached to the handle.
