I think my collection is at it's peak: Fällkniven GP

Knife collecting is sometimes hard to understand. If you allready have knives that you dont have time to or opportunity to use, why get more? Are we searching for a perfect knife that just does not exist?

My collecting peaked this week. I am not going to take the Chris Reeve - Rockstead - route, those are way out what I am willing to pay. I have been looking at the Fällkniven knives many times and liked them. I especially liked the Gentlemans pocket knife, but the price (somewhere around 280 euros) was too much. Then I found that a sports shop near me was offering them at a more reasonable price so I took the plunge.

I have hesitated buying knives at this price levell if I cant handle them first. I was happy I did. In the shop the first GP I had in my hands was otherwise fine, but the blade was way off center when closed. I was surprised that a high end knife could have this flaw. I asked for another one and this one was fine, so I bought it.

I must say that this is something that peaks my expectations of quality in many ways, but still this has one little flaw. The action is smoothest I have felt in any knife. Talk about ball bearings on glass - smooth. The detent is light, it is possible to shake the blade out. Still I feel safe carrying the knife, but one of my self-made pocket sheats has a good fit for this knife and I intended to use a sheath anyway. It is actually possible to open this knife one-handed if you want to, just pinch the blade out and push with your thumb.

Lock is perfect, just shy of 50 % and feels very sturdy. Actually it is sturdier than necessary in this kind of knife. There is a nice relief in the liner to use the lock. Now this is the flaw I found: the lock is not quite lined with the tang, there is a small protrusion over the tang. I will take some pictures and point it out. This does not affect function in any way.

Visually the knife looks like a modernized Barlow (some of you might have different opinion about that). I like the blade shape a lot, allthough the tip could be more pointy. I have to use it and just find out how usefull it is. Blade is shaving sharp out of box and finish is flawless. The lamCos steel should be 60 hrc or so the factory says. Time will tell how this holds an edge.

I will take some pictures containing also some more of my knives for reference. To start with here is a picture taken out of net.

Great knife. I find the steel t be phenomenal. It takes a scalpel like edge when stropped. Wish I kept my GP, but wanted the volcano and juni more. Enjoy the blade.

Some pictures of what I got. These are assorted according to their function, not to their "modernity" or "traditionality".

The "Gentleman's knives".

The "users" or EDC.

The "bad-asses" or martial blades (whatever..)

The fixed blades.

And the latest one, the Fällkniven GP. Arrow points where the locking liner is slightly raised over the tang. You can feel it with your finger and it is a bit sharp. Not so much that it would cause trouble, but I still consider it a flaw.

That Fallkniven looks like a great EDC if you are willing to carry it and use it. I have been itching to pick up one of Fallkniven's folders but to date the price has held me back as I have a lot of other choices already for my using needs. But, I feel sure that I eventually buy one.

I don't know if there is such a thing as reaching the peak in knife acquisitions. If the price was troublesome, then some finanacial healing is in order. But you'll be back. Hope you enjoy the knife.

That is a beautiful knife. The only thing that has held me back from buying it is the weight... It seems kind of heavy for a gentlemen's folder that I would have to carry in my pocket without a clip. I worry that it would be bouncing around in my pocket and annoy me. I have a U2 and it is light enough that I can put in the coin pocket of my pants and I don't even know its there.

If the small problem with the alignment of the blade and liner lock is bothering you I suggest you email Peter and show him the pictures. My experience with CS with them has been excellent. They are a big supplier of knives but they operate much like a small family shop.

I don't think it is that heavy, rather quite light considering the construction. I intend to make something resembling this pocket holster. If made with the rough side out it would prevent the bouncing you mentioned.

Interesting choice. You could probably address that flaw without too much trouble with the use of a diamond file.

I've seen some nice backlocks from Fallkniven that I would like to investigate further.
