I think my snap posts are too short?

I've got line 24 snaps that I'm trying to use in approximately 9 ounce letter. To me it seems like the posts are too short? I've tried it with a hammer as well as trying to use my drill press. No dice. Do I need longer posts?

Ive had this same problem before.

You can compress the leather right where you need the snap. This will help a lot!

I have ruined many snaps. Now, I will punch the hole, then use either a hammer and flat punch to compress, or a small C-clamp. The snap covers the compressed leather mark, so it does not detract from the finished look.

Yep snaps are avaialbe in many different post lengths. I've got several different ones in my snap box. But as Bigfatty suggested you can make em work and I've done so in a pinch. He's got a lot of good suggestions. I've also used a rivet and burr setter for compressing the leather. Can you skive the leather?

I got them on but there doesn't seem to be much material holding the pieces together. Next time I'll compress with the tools before I press the snaps on.

I did skiv it down a bit too.

Thanks !

Another option to this problem is using something like this:

Took me about 20 min with a cut off wheel on dremel to make it. I use a manual drill with this as it works through leather pretty quickly.

Sorry but I'm not understanding. What would I do with the spade bits?

I've modded the one on the left to remove material flat and decreased the diameter of the guide (?) point.

Now I punch a hole in leather and then using the modded bit remove some of the material.
The advantages (IMO) are that you can 'countersink' the back of the snap into the leather which means it will not scratch the blade, and the snap's thickness can be reduced which lowers the sheath's profile. Another thing is that you don't risk damage to leather from hammering or skiving.

yeah was gonna say....skiv a bit of the flesh side down [round knife or x-acto] so the post goes through and seats better
